We are looking for a Senior IT Infrastructure Engineer to support and develop our core IT systems and infrastructure.

The Senior IT Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for the design, maintenance, and continual improvement of the firm’s core IT infrastructure, ensuring stability, performance, and security across all systems and services. Working within a Microsoft-based environment built on Nutanix Hyper‑Converged Infrastructure (HCI) and Citrix virtualisation, the role provides senior‑level technical expertise, project delivery, and third‑line support to the firm’s 400+ users.
Reporting to the IT Infrastructure & Security Manager, this is a hands‑on role requiring deep technical knowledge, strong troubleshooting skills, and a proactive approach to maintaining a secure, resilient, and scalable infrastructure that underpins the firm’s business operations.
Working hours: Monday to Friday full time. In addition to usual hours of work, you will be on call, and you must be flexible to work additional hours on evenings and weekends as required for emergency cover and systems maintenance.
Office Location: Derby head office with remote and onsite support as required at our other offices.
Key Responsibilities- Infrastructure Design, Maintenance & Support
- Manage, maintain, and optimise the firm’s Nutanix HCI environment, ensuring high availability, performance, and scalability.
- Administer and support Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops infrastructure, including provisioning, user experience optimisation, and troubleshooting.
- Support and maintain the firm’s Microsoft stack, including Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, Exchange Online, Microsoft 365, and Azure services.
- Manage core networking infrastructure including switches, firewalls, VPNs, and wireless systems.
- Provide advanced (3rd‑line) technical support and act as an escalation point for the IT Service Desk and Infrastructure teams.
- Ensure system monitoring, alerting, and performance reporting are in place and effective.
- Project Delivery
- Lead and deliver infrastructure projects from design to implementation, ensuring minimal disruption to the business.
- Contribute to the planning and execution of technology refreshes, upgrades, and migrations.
- Evaluate and recommend new technologies to enhance performance, security, and resilience.
- Produce and maintain technical documentation, network diagrams, and operating procedures.
- Security, Resilience & Compliance
- Maintain robust backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity solutions, ensuring regular testing and documentation.
- Work to ensure systems comply with ISO 27001 and firm‑wide information security policies.
- Manage patching, firmware updates, and configuration management to maintain security and stability.
- Participate in regular system and security audits.
- Collaboration & Leadership
- Work closely with the IT Infrastructure, IT Service Desk and Systems Development teams to ensure cohesive service delivery.
- Mentor infrastructure engineers and provide technical guidance to the wider IT team.
- Contribute to capacity planning, budgeting, and procurement discussions.
- Significant experience in a senior infrastructure engineering or 3rd-line role, ideally within a professional services or legal environment.
- Strong hands‑on experience with Nutanix AHV and Prism management.
- Expertise in Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (or similar VDI environments).
- In‑depth knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server, Active Directory, Exchange Online, Microsoft 365, and Azure.
- Strong understanding of networking fundamentals, including VLANs, routing, switching, and firewalls.
- Proven experience supporting high‑availability environments with strong uptime requirements.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues.
- Experience with ITIL‑based support practices and change management processes.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
- Exposure to or certification in Nutanix (NCP/NCM), Citrix (CCA/CCP), or Microsoft (MCSA/MCSE/Azure).
- Experience with scripting or automation tools (e.g. PowerShell).
- Knowledge of backup and recovery platforms (e.g. Veeam, Rubrik).
- Familiarity with endpoint management tools (e.g. Intune, SCCM).
- Experience with enterprise security solutions and best practices.
