The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for leading and managing the operational aspects of the Firm. The COO works closely with the CEO and other senior executives to develop and implement strategies, policies, and initiatives that drive business growth and operational excellence. The COO will support the CEO to drive extensive and sustainable growth including considering acquisitions, creating new offices or practice groups, and expanding to new locations. The COO plays a critical role in ensuring operational efficiency, strategic execution and delivery of key projects, and the achievement of business goals.

As a member of the management board, the COO will work with the CEO in setting the pace and direction across the firm, contributing through the provision of strategic advice, decision support, and providing direction on projects. The COO will liaise with regulators and ensure appropriate governance and oversight arrangements are in place. The COO will have overall responsibility for internal operational processes and workflows to maximise efficiency and productivity across the Firm, transforming business units to provide efficient and cost‑effective support services that deliver enhanced client and colleague value and are fully compliant with legal and regulatory requirements. Reporting directly to the CEO, the COO is based at the Derby head office but will travel as necessary to other offices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the CEO to develop and implement the business’s vision, short‑ and long‑term strategy and objectives, holding managers and senior leaders to account.
  • Provide strategic direction and leadership for the organisation’s day‑to‑day operations.
  • Collaborate with other senior leaders and Heads of Departments to grow and strengthen the business and enhance operational effectiveness.
  • Oversee and optimise internal processes and workflows to maximise efficiency and productivity across all practice areas, with a continuous improvement focus.
  • In the case of crisis or problem, lead and steer the function to success.

Strategic Planning and Execution

  • Collaborate with the CEO and executive team to develop and execute the company’s strategic plan.
  • Determine annual operating plans and priorities for all areas and ensure the functions meet their planned costs through oversight of budget and FTE to meet targets in line with financial planning.
  • Effectively translate and communicate the vision and strategy of the function and ensure alignment with the Firm’s purpose and overall strategy, setting comprehensive goals for performance and growth.
  • Ensure that operational plans align with the organisation’s long‑term goals.
  • Make high‑quality investment recommendations which support the strategy.
  • Support senior leadership with key client tender submissions, and present to clients where required to ensure the Firm meets client demands.
  • Maintain awareness of the competitive market landscape, expansion opportunities and industry developments.
  • Demonstrate a high “execution focus” – focus on delivery, listening and learning from user experiences; the role holder must demonstrate a clear result‑orientated approach while implementing innovative ideas.

Resource Management

  • Manage and allocate resources effectively, including budgeting, staffing and capital investments where appropriate.
  • Monitor financial performance and profitability.
  • Assess progress of each operating unit against quality of service, efficiency and delivery objectives to ensure they are working towards improved service and reduced costs.
  • Set and assign operational goals for all areas and implement clear metrics and measurements to demonstrate effective performance.

Quality Assurance

  • Establish and maintain quality standards and best practices across all operational areas and practice areas.
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance quality and performance.

Supply Chain Management

  • Oversee procurement and supply chain management aligned to the Firm’s procurement process.
  • Conduct regular review of suppliers to ensure supplier quality and performance.

Risk Management

  • Identify and mitigate potential risks to the organisation, including financial, operational and reputational risks, ensuring all are captured on the Firm’s risk register.
  • Lead the organisational governance framework and foster a culture of accountability.
  • Lead and own the activities on the Firm’s governance calendar, providing regular updates at monthly board meetings.
  • Develop and implement risk management strategies and contingency plans including business continuity plans (BCP).
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations and industry standards set by the SRA, FCA or other regulatory bodies.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Build and lead a high‑performing operations team.
  • Encourage maximum performance and engagement among employees.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork and continuous learning.

Technology and Automation

  • In partnership with the Chief Information Officer, leverage technology and automation solutions to streamline operations and enhance productivity.
  • Stay current with technological trends relevant to the industry.
