About the Role
University Hospitals of Northamptonshire NHS Group is seeking an experienced and motivated Patient Safety & Risk Midwife to join the Maternity Directorate.
This is an exciting leadership opportunity for an experienced Midwife with a passion for patient safety, governance, and quality improvement. Working alongside the Perinatal Safety Improvement Team and senior clinical leaders, you will play a key role in developing a proactive safety culture, supporting incident investigations, managing risk processes, and driving continuous improvements in maternity services.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the delivery of maternity quality, governance, safety, and risk management strategies
- Lead and support incident reporting, investigations, and learning across maternity services
- Promote compliance with national maternity safety standards, Duty of Candour requirements, and CQC regulations
- Analyse incident and risk data to identify trends and support service improvements
- Support the maintenance and development of the Trust Risk Register
- Chair and coordinate governance meetings, risk management groups, and safety review forums
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to improve patient safety outcomes
- Support the implementation of national, regional, and Trust-wide patient safety programmes
- Provide expert advice and leadership on governance, quality improvement, and risk management
- Participate in the clinical escalation rota, providing senior leadership and decision-making support
What We’re Looking For
Essential
- Registered Midwife with current NMC registration
- Degree-level qualification or equivalent
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Broad range of midwifery experience, including community experience
- Experience participating in audit and quality improvement activities
- Knowledge of maternity governance, risk management, and patient safety processes
- Strong analytical, organisational, and communication skills
- Ability to work autonomously and influence change across multidisciplinary teams
- Excellent IT and report-writing skills
Desirable
- Master's degree or working towards
- Leadership or management qualification
- Previous management experience
- Experience of implementing change and leading service improvements
- Experience of project management
- Knowledge of maternity governance assurance frameworks and external reviews
- Experience working with Midwifery Education Systems
