About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Emergency Department Doctor (ST3+) to work in the Emergency Department at Inverclyde Royal Hospital, an urban ED with approximately 30,000 attendances per year. The service aims to meet RCEM standards, with this role aligned to ST3+ level or equivalent. This is an excellent opportunity for a senior ED clinician looking for a stable, long-term rota commitment within a supportive team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the Senior Decision Maker, providing autonomous clinical leadership and decision-making.
  • Supervise and support resident doctors (FY2 / GP trainees), ensuring safe and effective patient care.
  • Manage a wide range of undifferentiated emergency presentations, including acutely unwell patients.
  • Work collaboratively with onsite services, including Medical HDU and CCU.
  • Liaise with the resident anaesthetic team for critical care support, including transfer of Level 3 patients off site.
  • Deliver care in line with RCEM standards, local protocols, and patient safety priorities.

Department & Site Information

  • Approx. 30,000 ED attendances per year
  • Resident doctor on shift (FY2 or GP trainee)
  • On-site Medical HDU and CCU
  • Overnight resident anaesthetic cover
  • Trauma and paediatric ambulance bypass in place
  • ED open 24/7 to self-presenting patients

Person Specification

Essential

  • ST3+ level (or equivalent) experience in Emergency Medicine
  • Proven experience working as an independent Senior Decision Maker in an Emergency Department
  • Ability to supervise and support junior doctors overnight
  • Strong clinical judgement and confidence managing high-acuity presentations

Desirable

  • Experience in Paediatric Emergency Medicine
  • Experience in critical care or high-dependency settings
