We are looking for a Senior / Lead Frontend Engineer to join our rapidly expanding AI team at Fletchers Solicitors. This role sits within a fast-paced, high-autonomy environment where we are rapidly prototyping, iterating, and deploying state-of-the-art AI products for use across Fletchers and the wider legal sector. The team operates as a start-up-style unit within the wider business, reporting directly to the executive team, with a clear mandate to move quickly from idea to production.
You will be responsible for designing and building high-quality frontend applications that expose our Machine Learning and Large Language Model-based systems to users in a clear, reliable, and intuitive way. These interfaces are central to turning complex AI capabilities into usable, valuable products. We have ambitious plans to grow the AI team significantly over the next few years as we scale our internal platforms and commercialise our technology across the legal sector.
About Fletchers Solicitors & The AI Team: Fletchers is a rapidly growing consumer law firm specialising in personal injury and clinical negligence, with a growing practice in family and private client. Fletchers has deployed a machine learning tool for legal work (a decision support system for screening incoming cases, launched in 2017) and established a dedicated AI department in August 2023. Since then, we have been experimenting with a broader range of ML techniques, extending tools already in use, and productionising new ones through our growing data science & engineering teams. We aim to leverage Fletchers' unique legal-medical dataset and industry expertise to build AI tools that will shape the future of consumer law. We are well funded through private equity, enabling heavy investment in sector-specific AI tools that assist, automate, and augment specialist legal work. Tools range from simple behind-the-scenes model inference to agentic-AI pipelines for "always on" monitoring, to the core user interface used by many colleagues daily. We are also commercialising these tools so other specialist law firms can leverage Fletchers' legal and AI expertise, with an ambitious external growth agenda for the next 18 months.
The existing AI team is distributed across London, Manchester, Liverpool, Cambridge, and Bristol, with in-person meetings typically once or twice per month in Manchester.
The Role: As a Senior / Lead Frontend Engineer within the AI team, you will take ownership of the technical design and implementation of frontend applications, ensuring they are robust, scalable, and aligned with product and user needs. You will work closely with backend engineers, data scientists, and product stakeholders to translate AI capabilities into polished, production-ready user experiences. This role is suited to an experienced frontend engineer who is comfortable operating with a high degree of independence, setting technical direction where appropriate, and making pragmatic trade-offs in a fast-moving environment.
Main Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and maintain frontend applications for AI-enabled products using TypeScript and React, ensuring performance and reliability.
- Own frontend architecture and contribute to longer-term technical direction and standards.
- Translate complex AI-driven workflows into clear, intuitive, and reliable user interfaces.
- Collaborate with backend, data science, infrastructure, and product teams; work directly with internal users and stakeholders to gather feedback, scope requirements, and iterate on features.
- Support rapid prototyping while ensuring successful prototypes can be hardened for production use.
- Review code and, where appropriate, provide technical guidance and mentorship to others.
Experience:
- Strong professional experience building frontend applications with TypeScript and React.
- Proven ability to design and maintain complex frontend codebases in a production environment.
- Experience working closely with APIs and backend services.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, showing ownership, prioritisation, and delivery focus.
- Comfort operating in a fast-paced environment where requirements may evolve rapidly.
- Strong communication skills and sound engineering judgment.
- Based in the UK, with the ability to attend in-person team meetings approximately once per month.
Desirable Skills & Experience:
- Experience leading frontend development efforts or acting as a technical lead.
- Experience defining frontend architecture, standards, and best practices.
- Familiarity with design systems and component libraries.
- Experience working on data-heavy or workflow-driven applications.
- Exposure to Machine Learning or AI-enabled products.
In Return Fletchers Offers:
- 35 hours working week.
- Bonus scheme (subject to targets being met).
- 35 days holiday a year including bank holidays and Christmas Closure; option to purchase up to 3 extra days' holiday per year.
- Pension scheme with tax-efficient salary sacrifice option.
- Life Assurance Policy.
- Medicash policy to cover some dental, optical and other medical expenses.
- Company sick pay.
- Enhanced Maternity, Paternity and IVF schemes.
- Flexible, agile working environment with a positive work-life balance.
- Varied calendar of funded company social events.
- Monthly voucher awards for winning nominees.
- A supportive and friendly culture.
- Ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
