Working Hours: Flexible, as required by the Head of Academy Sport Science, and balanced alongside a part-time Master’s degree. Evening and weekend work will be expected.
Role Overview: Fleetwood Town Football Club is offering an exciting opportunity for an ambitious individual to join the Academy as a Sport Science Intern. This role is designed to be undertaken alongside a fully funded Master’s degree at one of the Club’s partner universities. You will be part of a forward-thinking Academy with a strong track record of developing players who progress through the football pyramid and regularly feature in the First Team. The role is based at the Club’s £10 million Poolfoot Farm training facility, which is currently undergoing further expansion, including the development of an indoor training space.
Key Responsibilities
- Professional Development Phase: Support the Head of Academy Sport Science, Lead Sport Scientist, and Strength & Conditioning Coach in delivering pitch-based and gym-based conditioning sessions for U14–U16 players and U18 and U21 squads.
- Assist with the collection, analysis, and interpretation of performance data to inform training decisions.
- Provide feedback to coaches and the multidisciplinary team.
- Contribute to session reviews and future training planning.
- Youth Development, Transition & Foundation Phases: Design and deliver age-appropriate on-field athletic development sessions aligned with the Long-Term Athletic Development Plan.
- Plan and deliver strength and conditioning programmes in the gym for academy squads.
- Deliver movement and multi-sport sessions within the Youth Development Phase (YDP).
- Monitor internal and external training load using GPS and heart rate technology.
- Assist with the academy’s physical testing battery (conducted every 12 weeks), including data collection and analysis.
- Contribute to player reviews based on testing outcomes and physical development.
- Deliver nutrition and lifestyle workshops to players and parents to support performance and wellbeing.
- Undertake additional duties as requested by senior academy staff.
Master’s Degree Requirement: Enrol in and complete a Master’s degree in Sport Science or Strength & Conditioning. Use Fleetwood Town Academy data to complete a research project/dissertation.
Qualifications:
- BSc (Hons) in Sport Science or a related field.
- Eligibility to meet entry requirements for a relevant Master’s programme.
- British Weightlifting (BWL) Level 1.
- Attendance at UKSCA workshops, including Weightlifting for Performance, Plyometrics, Speed & Agility, Planning Effective Programmes.
