We’re looking for a Senior Data Scientist for 12 months to help us accomplish our mission to improve and extend lives by learning from the experience of every person with cancer.

Are you ready to be the next changemaker in cancer care?

Flatiron Health is a healthtech company using data for good to power smarter care for every person with cancer, around the world.

Flatiron partners with cancer centers in the US, Europe and Asia to transform patients’ real-life experiences into real-world evidence and create a more modern, connected oncology ecosystem.

Our multidisciplinary teams include oncologists, data scientists, data analysts, software engineers, research scientists, product experts and more.

Flatiron Health is an independent affiliate of the Roche Group.

What You’ll Do

This role is part of our International Data Science team.

The Data Science Team is a diverse and talented group of individuals with strong data expertise and understanding of our customers’ needs.

Building on 10 years of experience in the US, Flatiron’s international team is scaling Flatiron’s approach in new countries.

Streamlined teams in each market are establishing partnerships with local cancer care providers and developing high-quality real-world data for researchers around the world.

Data Scientists are embedded in those teams and play a key role in understanding our data partners’ source data and conducting exploratory data analyses to support data-driven decision-making.

They build research‑grade data sets and leverage a breadth of tools, including AI, to develop approaches to enrich our data models, maximise data quality and increase efficiency and robustness of our pipelines.

  • Work closely with a cross‑functional team (e. g., product managers, software engineers, oncologists, clinical data specialists) to develop new real‑world data products.
  • Establish strong relationships with key stakeholders at our partner sites and collaborate with them to develop a deep understanding of their data and enable seamless data transfers.
  • Become a subject matter expert in the format, quality, content and sources of data from our partners; develop validation approaches to ensure consistency of these sources.
  • Conduct exploratory analyses to define source data ingestion approaches that meet our quality bar; define business logic to transform new source data into Flatiron’s common data model.
  • Apply and validate LLM‑based approaches to process unstructured electronic health record data at scale to enhance our real‑world data products.
  • Collaborate with software engineers to design, implement and automate scalable data pipelines, utilising internal or off‑the‑shelf external AI tools.

Who You Are

  • You have a BS or MS from a technical field of study (e. g., data science, engineering, computer science, mathematics, applied statistics, health economics, etc.) with 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • You have strong data empathy and enjoy the process of exploring and developing a deep understanding of new data sources.
  • You’re impact‑oriented, and care deeply about creating real change for customers, users, and ultimately patients.
  • You have some experience working with ML and LLMs.

You understand how machine learning and AI systems are measured and can analyse an existing system to understand the quality of its output, assess where improvements are needed, and communicate the impact of those improvements to stakeholders.

  • You have collaborated with other technical team members in a production development environment using formal version control, Python (including data manipulation in pandas, polars or a similar framework), and SQL.
  • You have an understanding of key statistical concepts and the ability to generate and interpret statistical analyses.
  • You are a clear and confident communicator who can break down complex data analyses to tell a compelling story.
  • You are a self‑starter with a strong sense of ownership who can independently prioritise and who enjoys coming up with innovative solutions to challenging problems.
  • You are passionate about our mission to improve cancer care through data and technology.
  • You enjoy working in a fast‑paced startup‑like environment.
  • Optional
  • You have prior experience in healthcare.
  • You have experience working in DBT, Snowflake or are excited to learn.
