Role Purpose

This apprenticeship offers new drivers the opportunity to train as HGV Low Loader Drivers while gaining practical experience and formal qualifications. The role combines on-the-job driving and load handling with structured training, safety induction, and mentorship. Apprentices will support transport operations, learn to operate low loaders safely, and develop the skills required to progress to a fully qualified HGV driver within the company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Complete a structured apprenticeship programme, including theory, practical driving training, and workplace assessments.
  • Learn to load, secure and transport plant, machinery and other heavy items on low loader trailers in accordance with company procedures and legal requirements.
  • Assist with pre-start vehicle checks, daily inspections and basic maintenance reporting to ensure vehicle safety and roadworthiness.
  • Work under the supervision of experienced drivers and transport controllers to plan safe routes and manage delivery schedules.
  • Adhere to drivers’ hours regulations, company policies and health and safety procedures at all times.
  • Maintain accurate records of loads, vehicles and training progress using company systems.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, safety briefings and continuous professional development activities.
  • Provide courteous and professional customer service when representing the company on site and on the road.

Skills & Experience

Essential
  • Desire to develop a career in professional driving and plant transport.
  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills to complete paperwork and follow instructions.
  • Good timekeeping, reliability and a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and work as part of a team.
  • Willingness to undertake training, assessments and licence acquisition (e.g. provisional categories, CPC and Driver Certificate of Professional Competence where required).
  • Right to work in the UK.
Desirable
  • Previous experience driving large vehicles, towing or operating machinery (not essential).
  • Full UK driving licence (category B).
