Job Summary
As a domiciliary optometrist, you will play a crucial role in delivering high-quality eye care services to patients in their homes and at selected community locations. Your clinical expertise will support both private patients and NHS services, ensuring access to professional eye examinations for patients who may otherwise struggle to attend a traditional practice setting.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Manage a daily schedule of patients requiring domiciliary eye care services.
- Conduct comprehensive eye examinations in accordance with GOC and College of Optometrists guidelines.
- Assess visual acuity and refraction to determine appropriate optical prescriptions.
- Identify and manage ocular health conditions including glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration and other eye diseases.
- Use portable diagnostic equipment including ophthalmoscopy and tonometry where appropriate.
- Provide clear advice to patients and carers regarding vision care, treatment options and referrals.
- Prescribe spectacles and optical solutions tailored to individual patient needs.
- Make appropriate referrals to GPs, ophthalmologists or hospital eye services where required.
- Maintain accurate patient records and ensure compliance with professional and regulatory standards.
- Adhere to infection control, clinical governance and best practice protocols.
Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain registration with the General Optical Council (GOC).
- Undertake continuous professional development (CPD) in line with GOC requirements.
- Reflect on clinical practice to identify strengths and development needs.
- Understand and apply clinical governance principles within Optometry.
- Ensure compliance with Infection Control, Health and Safety, and Risk Management policies.
Your Skills & Experience
- GOC-registered Optometrist.
- Excellent communication and patient-care skills.
- Comfortable working in a mobile, independent environment.
- Confident driver with at least two years of driving experience.
- Proficient with digital systems and patient record management.
- Highly organised with strong attention to detail.
- Calm under pressure and able to manage a varied caseload.
- Able to work within clinical knowledge and professional limitations.
