We are seeking an enthusiastic Senior Research Associate specializing in histopathology to join our Histology team. The candidate will work closely with our team of scientists to advance our somatic genomics platform. The successful candidate will perform pathological assessment and characterization of tissue samples across a range of diseases and support our histology platform through high-quality tissue preparation and workflow management. This role would suit a biomedical scientist with specialty training in histology or a histopathologist looking for a role within a Biotech company. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment, supporting delivery across prioritized workstreams with agility, positivity, and a proactive mindset. Responsibilities:
- Perform histopathological assessment and support interpretation of human tissue samples, including but not limited to gastrointestinal, pulmonary, and other disease-relevant tissues to identify disease-relevant tissue regions.
- Assess tissue sample quality and suitability for project use in phenotype-specific isolation workflows.
- Identify and annotate disease-relevant tissue regions to support downstream molecular profiling, microdissection, and somatic variant analysis.
- Carry out histological techniques including dissection, tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and specialized staining protocols.
- Review and support the interpretation of histology, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and tissue-based assay data to enable scientific decision-making.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to support process optimization and method development.
- Ensure accurate handling, labelling and traceability of human tissue samples throughout the laboratory workflow.
- Maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and quality standards, including the Human Tissue Act and COSHH.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to enhance laboratory efficiency, reproducibility, and turnaround times.
Qualifications:
Essential:
- BSc or MSc degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, biomedical science or related field.
- 3+ years of relevant post-graduation experience.
- Experience working within a histopathology lab within either a Biotech, academia or NHS environment.
- Specialist training and practical experience in histology techniques and tissue-based assays.
- Proficiency in tissue sectioning, H&E staining, immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescence (IF) and digital pathology workflows.
- Expertise in histological assay development, optimisation, and troubleshooting.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Knowledge and experience of working under HTA regulations.
- Strong communication and collaborative skills with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced startup environment.
- Use of laboratory information management systems (Benchling preferred).
Desirable:
- Knowledge of image analysis and digital pathology software.
- Experience of working in a high-throughput laboratory environment.
- Familiarity with automated histology instrumentation.
- Experience in a variety of molecular biology techniques, including nucleic acid extraction and NGS library preparation.
- Experience working with laser capture microdissection.
