About the Role
An Underwriter responsible for managing new business and renewals across a commercial property and casualty portfolio, including property owners, commercial combined and construction. The role combines autonomous risk assessment and pricing with broker relationship management, focusing on profitable growth, retention and portfolio performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Underwrite new business, renewals and mid-term adjustments within agreed authority levels and risk appetite.
- Build and maintain broker relationships to generate new business and improve renewal retention.
- Assess risk exposures, hazards, business activities and claims history to make informed underwriting decisions.
- Support digital trading and referrals, providing timely, commercially sound underwriting decisions.
- Monitor portfolio performance and loss ratios, identifying risks and supporting corrective action.
- Maintain accurate underwriting records and provide clear recommendations for referrals.
- Identify cross-selling opportunities and collaborate with colleagues to support business growth.
- Achieve individual targets for new business, retention, portfolio quality and profitability.
Skills & Experience
- 2–3 years’ commercial property and casualty underwriting experience within an insurer, MGA or similar environment.
- Working knowledge of property owners, commercial combined and construction risks.
- Confidence in risk selection, rating, pricing and working within delegated authority.
- Strong broker relationship management and business development skills.
- Analytical and commercially minded, with an understanding of portfolio performance and profitability.
- Relevant or progressing professional insurance qualifications.
- Proficiency in underwriting systems, with strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Self-motivated, proactive and focused on achieving individual and team objectives.
