- Monday to Thursday: 07:00 – 15:00

Monmouthshire County Council is seeking 2 HGV Driver Team Leaders to support the delivery of recycling and waste collections across the county. This is a frontline driving and team leadership role. The successful candidate will drive Refuse Collection Vehicles and other vehicles, oversee loaders, ensure collections are completed safely and efficiently, complete vehicle checks, report defects, maintain route safety, ensure PPE compliance and act as the public-facing lead for the crew.
The role requires a clean and current LGV Category C licence, up-to-date Driver CPC, relevant experience in a similar role, and the ability to lead an effective waste collection team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Drive Refuse Collection Vehicles and other recycling/waste vehicles
- Lead loaders and ensure collections are carried out safely and efficiently
- Complete food waste, garden waste, residual waste, hygiene waste, dry recycling and trade waste collections
- Ensure scheduled collections are completed, including assisted collections and extra allocations
- Carry out daily vehicle safety checks
- Record and report vehicle defects immediately
- Ensure crews wear PPE and follow safe working practices
- Ensure receptacles are returned correctly after collection
- Ensure spillages are cleaned up and contamination procedures are followed
- Monitor route risks and report any new hazards
- Report accidents, incidents and near misses promptly
- Ensure vehicles are clean and fuelled at the end of the day
- Complete all required documentation accurately and on time
- Act as safeguarding lead for the team and report concerns
- Use issued technology correctly and report any defects
- Support route optimisation and service improvement projects
- Work from other depots when operationally required
- Deputise for the Deputy Supervisor when required
- Carry out other duties such as loading, litter collection, sandbagging or winter gritting when needed
Essential Experience & Skills:
- Clean current LGV Category C licence
- Up-to-date Driver CPC
- Relevant experience in a similar HGV / LGV driving role
- Experience or willingness to lead an effective team
- Good understanding of health and safety requirements
- Ability to follow H&S policies and safe working procedures
- Ability to work without close supervision
- Good communication skills
- Understanding of recycling and waste services
- Ability to supervise colleagues and ensure safe, professional collections
- Commitment to quality recycling service and public engagement
- Flexible approach to duties and service needs
- Willingness to undertake relevant training
- Ability to work outside core hours when required
Desirable:
- Welsh language skills
- Previous local authority waste collection experience
- Experience driving Refuse Collection Vehicles
- Experience supervising loaders or frontline operational crews
This role does not require a DBS check. Bank holidays are considered normal working days for recycling and waste operations, except 25–26 December and 1 January. Bank holiday working is paid at double time plus accrual of a bank holiday leave day.
