Salary: £45,000 - £55,000

About us

As part of the RSK Group, Fishtek Ltd provides high quality civil engineering and fisheries consultancy services across the UK, Ireland, SE Asia, and West Africa. We are composed of a team of Civil and Structural Engineers and fisheries biologists engaging with a wider network of specialists across the river environment. Our Engineers are primarily focussed upon the design and construction of fish and eel passes to overcome river obstructions such as dams and weirs, making a positive difference to the environment.

The Role

Following continued growth, Fishtek has an opportunity for a Civil Engineer to join our Install/Construction team, reporting to the Construction and Design & Build Manager. The role combines hands‑on project management with commercial and contractual responsibility on small to medium‑sized construction projects, working closely with our site teams, clients, subcontractors and suppliers. Time is split approximately 50/50 between our Dartington office and project sites across the UK. This role is particularly suited to individuals with 5 to 7 years’ experience delivering small/medium-size construction projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day delivery of small/medium-size construction projects from pre-start and mobilisation through to completion and handover, liaising with the site team on programme, quality, and health and safety
  • Act as the main day-to-day point of contact for the client: attend progress meetings, issue progress reports, and address and resolve issues as they arise
  • Procure, coordinate and manage subcontractors and suppliers, including obtaining quotations, placing orders, monitoring performance and certifying payments
  • Monitor and report on project financial performance, including budgets, cost-value reconciliation, forecasts, applications for payment and final accounts
  • Review contract and subcontract documents, identify risks and obligations, and administer contracts, including early warnings, compensation events and variations, within contractual timescales
  • Prepare and maintain construction programmes, and prepare or review RAMS, inspection and test plans and permit applications
  • Support the Principal Contractor and Principal Designer duties under CDM 2015, ensuring site activities comply with the Construction Phase Plan
  • Liaise with the design team on technical queries and design changes during construction, particularly on Design & Build projects
  • Compile handover documentation, including as-built records, quality records and health and safety file information, and capture lessons learned
  • Report to the Construction and D&B Manager and assist with any other projects in the construction stage as required.

Qualifications and Key Skills

Essential:

  • BSc or MSc in Civil Engineering
  • 5 to 7 years’ experience delivering small/medium-size construction projects, ideally civil engineering works in rivers, water or infrastructure environments
  • Demonstrable experience managing the financial performance of projects, including budgets, cost reporting, forecasting, valuations and applications for payment
  • Working knowledge of construction contracts (NEC4 ECC/ECS and/or JCT), including early warnings, compensation events and variations
  • Experience procuring and managing subcontractors and suppliers
  • Sound understanding of CDM 2015 and site health and safety, including preparing and reviewing RAMS
  • Confident communicator, able to manage client relationships and resolve issues with clients, subcontractors and suppliers
  • Good IT skills (MS Office, particularly Excel; MS Project or similar programming software) and willingness to learn new tools and workflows
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow engineering/construction standards
  • Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a collaborative technical team
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to and stay at project sites across the UK

Desirable (Training Provided)

  • Chartered or Incorporated status with the ICE, or working towards it
  • SMSTS or SSSTS, and a valid CSCS card
  • Experience of working in or near watercourses, including Environment Agency permitting
  • Experience of Design & Build projects and managing design interfaces during construction
  • An interest in rivers, ecology, conservation or sustainable engineering

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary £45,000 - £55,000 (dependent on experience and skills)
  • Clear progression path towards roles above
  • Mentoring and training, engineering design, and professional development
  • Company pension and annual bonus
  • Supportive working environment and excellent work/life balance in a purpose-built office located in Dartington, South Devon
