We have an exciting opportunity for a new Database Administrator to join our Systems team. Your focus would initially be on the day-to-day lifecycle management of our core system databases; however, the individual will be central to the implementation of a new data warehouse planned for the business.

Simplification and Integration is key as we have legacy solutions based on different database technologies along with complex integrations between our transactional systems and our core applications. This role will really suit you if you have a background in multiple database systems; extract, load and transform (ETL) solutions and have an ability to create normalised data sets for reporting with BI tools such as PowerBI.

This role will be based in Ashby and although we do offer a hybrid working policy, it’s essential that you’d be commutable to Ashby weekly. Our standard hours are 8.45am – 5.15pm (37.5 hours) however we’re open to discussing flexible working requirements with a minimum working week of 30 hours per week.

Duties will include:

  • Maintaining and monitoring existing databases
  • Creating new data repositories as the need arises
  • Developing innovative approaches to storing data via warehousing
  • Managing update processes and creating data backups
  • Restoring lost data
  • Helping to model data for new applications within the business
  • Developing and maintaining procedures and documentation for databases
  • Identifying, evaluating, and managing the adoption of appropriate database administration tools and processes, including automation
  • Contributing to the setting of standards for definition, security and integrity of database objects and ensuring conformance to those standards
  • Maintenance and management of the data dictionary
  • Implementing a security-first approach to storing and retrieving data
  • Monitoring database activity and resource usage
  • Building test versions and testing
  • Designing efficient queries for analytics and reporting access the business
  • Identifying areas for optimisation
  • Generally guiding the smooth daily operation of our data landscape
  • Facilitating data integrity and business continuity processes

The successful candidate will have...

  • Database administration and design
  • Relational and non-relational database architectures
  • Maintaining and developing self-hosted and DBaaS Cloud databases (AWS/AZURE)
  • Data warehouse solutions (e.g., Redshift, Panoply, Snowflake)
  • Structured Query Languages (e.g., MySQL, MariaDB, MSSQL)
  • NoSQL Technologies (e.g., MongoDB, Elasticsearch, CouchDB)
  • Using access control policies and management systems (Active Directory & SSO technologies for instance)
  • Business intelligence, reporting and dashboarding tools (e.g., PowerBI)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication

In addition, the following would be desirable:

  • Data model design (UML, Entity Relation) and related documentation
  • An understanding of IT infrastructure from an architectural perspective and how it impacts your work
  • Working within an Agile environment
  • Working within a team and independently
  • Identifying areas for improvement
  • Introducing proposed changes through the correct channels to see them through to fruition
  • Automation as it relates to your role
  • Integrating and exposing data from multiple services (for example Microsoft Power Platform)
