Algapelago Marine Ltd is looking for a Marine Operations Lead to deliver its aquaculture and research programs in Bideford Bay, North Devon. This varied role includes leading the skipper on vessels, inspecting and maintaining aquaculture equipment and facilities, overseeing shore logistics and maintenance, and handling office and administrative tasks.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Offshore
    • Lead skipper on Algapelago vessels (fleet: 7.9m Catamaran currently, 12m Landing Craft in procurement)
    • Maintain all vessels, moorings and marine assets
    • Inspect and maintain equipment and facilities around the farm
    • Deliver environmental monitoring program – deploy and retrieve research equipment
    • Handle boat operations around the farm
    • Conduct crew training, emergency drills and serve as health & safety lead
    • Perform general farm tasks to keep the operation running
  • Shore Logistics and Maintenance
    • Lead maintenance and inventory of warehouse and processing equipment
    • Rig, repair and procure aquaculture equipment to meet kelp and mussel production goals
    • Maintain site housekeeping and general upkeep
  • Office
    • Draft and maintain safety management systems, risk assessments, method statements and safe‑working procedures
    • Code vessels and ensure compliance with legal regulations
    • Handle ad‑hoc office and administrative tasks

Essential Skills & Qualifications

  • Full UK driving licence (maximum 6 points)
  • Certificate to operate a vessel up to 24 metres, day and night (Yachtmaster, Master 200GT preferred; Advanced Powerboat minimum)
  • Must hold or be able to obtain and retain an ML5 or ENG1 medical certificate
  • Strong communication and planning skills
  • Commitment to safe working practices
  • Flexible work approach to meet job demands
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn
  • Ability to understand the site’s aims and support the team to achieve them

Desired Skills & Qualifications

  • Further education or experience in aquaculture or equivalent occupations
  • 3+ years experience aboard commercial vessels
  • Crane operator certification
  • Forklift operator certification
  • Desire to support broader company functions (sales, marketing, product development)

Commitment Requirements

  • Full‑time role based in North Devon with company sites in Appledore and South Molton
  • Occasional travel to other company sites and external stakeholders
  • 6‑month probationary review

Remuneration

Salary range: £25,000 to £35,000 depending on experience.
