About the team
An excellent opportunity to join our Operational Management team at Swansea, providing support and development for our team of trainee and experienced Drivers. We are in a time of transition and optimism for the future, making it a challenging and rewarding work environment. Working in a team and together with the wider Central Region, we will achieve our goals and deliver a fantastic service.
As a Driver Standards Manager, you will play a key role in delivering for our customers by keeping our services moving around the clock, driving performance improvements, and ensuring our Drivers are equipped with all the tools and knowledge to allow them to deliver a first-class service.
About the job
Main responsibilities will be:
- The delivery of GWR's competence management systems for safety critical operational staff, focusing primarily on Drivers.
- Line management of Drivers: welfare, conduct, attendance.
- Assessing and developing operational competence, particularly train driving performance to deliver improvements in line with company and industry requirements.
- Incident/accident investigations and due diligence checks.
- Safety briefing of Drivers.
- Involvement in Operational Training of Drivers.
- On call commitment.
You’ll need to be:
- Able to supply subject matter expertise relating to the development of company standards and working practices.
- Work flexibly and efficiently.
- A strong team player with excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
- Able to learn/adapt to change.
- Self-motivated, committed to delivering results with minimum supervision and able to use initiative appropriately.
- Able to work methodically and create/maintain accurate records.
As a minimum you’ll need to have:
- Excellent knowledge of GWR operations and standards.
- Mainline Train Driver competence.
- Good Microsoft Office skills.
Desirable:
- D31/D32 or A1 certification would be an advantage, although training in this area can be provided.
- Previous line management experience.
About the location
Swansea Driver Management Team are currently based in new offices in the Maliphant.
Working Pattern
The role will be based across Swansea & Cardiff depots, predominantly office hours but some out of hours in line with business needs.

This role is a secondment into the DSM role for a fixed term.
