About the team

We are the home depot for the Night Riviera Sleeper fleet and Class 57 locomotives within GWR. Our Engineering team is dynamic, highly skilled, and committed to delivering safe, reliable, and high‑quality trains, on time and within budget. The work we do is critical to achieving GWR's operational goals, and we take pride in our collaborative approach. In addition to maintaining the Sleeper fleet and locomotives, we also carry out overnight servicing and defect repairs on other GWR fleets, ensuring they are ready for service each day. The team has undergone significant transformation in recent years, and with exciting challenges ahead, this is a great time to join us. You will play an active role in a wide range of activities essential to the smooth running of our busy Long Rock maintenance depot. About the job

In this position, you will take ownership of the Sleeper fleet's service performance and lead initiatives to drive continuous improvement. You will also ensure that the depot's Engineering function operates in full compliance with all Safety, Fleet, Plant & Equipment, Environmental, and Security standards. Your contribution will be key to enhancing operational efficiency and reducing risk across all engineering activities. Monitor and address areas of non‑compliance with GWR's Engineering Integrated Management System and Safety Management Systems. Support the wider team by implementing necessary changes and driving improvements in safety, financial, and technical performance. Work closely with the Depot Manager to deliver strategic objectives and ensure alignment with business goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and empower the Depot Engineering Manager and Plant teams, ensuring their goals align with the wider business vision and drive success across the depot.
  • Champion excellence by delivering continuous improvements in safety, compliance, and operational performance, setting the standard for best practice.
  • Shape the future by supporting strategic initiatives and ensuring all engineering activities consistently meet GWR's high standards and contribute to an exceptional customer experience.

You’ll need to be:

  • Highly organised and committed to excellence

  • A strong communicator with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Operationally knowledgeable and confident in decision‑making

As a minimum you’ll need to have:

  • A solid background in Engineering.
  • Experience working both collaboratively within a team and independently using your own initiative.
  • Proven line management experience with the ability to lead and develop others.
  • Strong knowledge of Health & Safety standards (OHSAS 18001).
  • Familiarity with Quality and Environmental management systems (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 50001).
  • A strategic mindset with a track record of delivering business‑critical outcomes.
