Role Description

The Assistant Head Of School is a full‑time, on‑site role based in Manchester, supporting the Head Of School in the day‑to‑day leadership and management of a specialist educational setting. This role involves overseeing teaching and learning across designated areas, monitoring curriculum delivery, and supporting staff in planning, classroom practice, and assessment. The Assistant Head Of School will help implement school policies, contribute to safeguarding and behaviour management, and ensure a positive, inclusive environment for all learners. Responsibilities include analysing performance data, contributing to improvement plans, coordinating with external agencies and families, and supporting staff development through coaching, feedback, and training. The role also involves participating in strategic planning, assisting with operational decisions, and acting as a key point of contact when the Head Of School is unavailable.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills in an educational setting, including experience supporting staff and contributing to school improvement.
  • Strong knowledge of curriculum, assessment, and inclusive teaching practices, ideally within specialist or additional needs education.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with learners, families, colleagues, and external professionals.
  • Proven ability in safeguarding, behaviour management, and creating a safe, supportive school environment.
  • Organisational and problem‑solving skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities and respond calmly to challenges.
  • Relevant teaching qualification (e.g., QTS or equivalent) and experience in school‑based teaching; leadership training or qualifications are an advantage.
  • Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, with a person‑centred approach to supporting children and young people.
  • Familiarity with regulatory and inspection frameworks for schools and care settings (e.g., Ofsted), and experience contributing to compliance and quality assurance.
