About the Role:
We’re looking for Principal Design Engineers to join a National Grid project, leading the design and assurance of high-voltage substation systems. This is a senior technical role requiring CDAE or LCDAE authorisation and strong experience in primary substation design and HV plant engineering. The role can be fully remote or based in Leeds.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the design of primary substation systems, including layout, specification, and integration of high-voltage equipment (transformers, circuit breakers, busbars, isolators, etc.).
- Review, approve, and assure designs in line with National Grid standards, including TP137 and SR188.
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to design teams.
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, including secondary design, civil, and project management teams, to ensure integrated design delivery.
- Ensure all design work complies with safety, reliability, and regulatory standards.
Required Experience & Skills:
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
- Extensive experience (typically 10+ years) in substation design and high-voltage engineering.
- CDAE or LCDAE authorisation under National Grid TP137.
- Strong knowledge of HV plant systems, substation layouts, and UK transmission network design standards.
- Proven ability to review, approve, and sign off designs.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
