Recruiting on behalf of a major UK electricity distribution network operator
We are currently recruiting for an Overhead Line Policy Engineer to join a highly respected client within the electricity distribution sector. This is a permanent opportunity within the Policy & Standards function of the Asset & Investment directorate, focusing on the development, management, and implementation of policies and standards across the overhead line (OHL) network infrastructure, from LV through to 132kV.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain company policies and technical standards relating to OHL design, operation, maintenance, and end-of-life.
- Ensure standards align with business risk profiles and long-term strategic planning.
- Provide technical support in the approval and audit of equipment, including factory acceptance and witness testing as required.
- Lead investigations into equipment malfunctions and develop modifications or improvements.
- Contribute to national standard-setting processes and represent the company in external forums.
- Support equipment procurement and technical tender evaluations.
- Collaborate with operations, training teams, and other internal stakeholders to ensure consistent application of policy.
- Promote and support innovation, including smart grid and new technology integration.
Requirements
- HNC in Electrical Engineering (Essential)
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent (Desirable)
- Minimum 5 years\’ experience in one or more of the following:
- Overhead line equipment manufacture
- Construction and maintenance of electricity distribution networks
- Technical policy management
Technical Knowledge
- Strong understanding of UK electricity distribution networks (Essential)
- Familiarity with OHL practices across voltages (Desirable)
Skills
- Ability to develop technical policy, standards, and specifications
- Analytical and investigative capability
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to self-manage and prioritise workload
- IT proficiency, including MS Word and Excel
- Understanding of asset data systems (Desirable)
Key Relationships
You will work closely with:
- Internal departments across asset management, operations, system planning, customer services, finance, and training
- Contractors, suppliers, and Independent Connection Providers (ICPs)
- National regulatory and standardisation bodies
