We are seeking an experienced environmental professional to provide expert environmental support across a diverse portfolio of offshore and onshore operations within the UK energy sector. Reporting to the Environmental Manager, this role will support the leadership and coordination of the environmental function, providing high-level input into environmental strategy, regulatory compliance, stakeholder engagement, and continuous performance improvement. The successful candidate will also deputise for the Environmental Manager when required and lead initiatives that enhance environmental performance and governance.
Health, Safety and Environmental Leadership
- Ensure all activities are carried out safely and in compliance with applicable legislation, regulatory requirements, company procedures, values, behaviours, and process safety expectations.
- Promote a strong environmental culture and support continual improvement across operational and project activities.
Environmental Compliance and Regulatory Support
- Provide expert environmental advice to project and operational teams on legislative and regulatory requirements.
- Lead the preparation and submission of complex environmental permits, consents, and regulatory applications, ensuring consistency and efficiency across the business.
- Oversee and assure compliance with relevant UK environmental legislation, regulations, and company standards.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with key regulatory bodies, including OPRED, SEPA, and the Environment Agency.
- Lead environmental risk assessments, including ENVIDs and EIAs, and support the identification and selection of Best Practicable Environmental Options (BPEO) for complex or high-risk activities.
- Coordinate environmental inspections, audits, and incident investigations, ensuring lessons learned are effectively communicated and implemented.
- Support emergency response activities and provide environmental expertise during exercises and live incidents.
Environmental Management Systems and Performance
- Lead the continual development, governance, and improvement of the Environmental Management System (EMS).
- Analyse environmental performance data using tools such as Excel and Power BI to identify trends, risks, opportunities, and areas for improvement.
- Develop and deliver environmental training and awareness programmes across the organisation.
- Manage contracts and service providers relating to environmental activities, including waste management, NORM, and specialist consultancy services.
Leadership and Collaboration
- Coordinate environmental activities across HSE, asset, project, and contractor teams.
- Provide coaching, guidance, and support to junior environmental personnel.
- Deputise for the Environmental Manager as required and contribute to strategic environmental planning.
Candidate Requirements
Qualifications
- Degree-qualified in an environmental, science, engineering, or related discipline.
- Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) or equivalent professional accreditation preferred.
- Membership of a recognised professional body with a commitment to continuing professional development (CPD).
Experience
- Extensive environmental experience within the offshore and/or onshore oil and gas industry.
- Demonstrated experience leading environmental compliance programmes and regulatory engagement activities.
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary projects and driving continuous improvement initiatives.
- Lead Auditor (ISO 14001) qualification and incident investigation training (e.g., COMET) are advantageous.
Technical Knowledge
- Strong knowledge and practical experience of UK North Sea environmental legislation and policy.
- UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS) and emissions regulation.
- Greenhouse gas accounting, flare and vent management.
- Produced water and chemical discharge management under OPPC regulations.
- Waste management, NORM compliance, and decommissioning requirements.
- Environmental management systems and ISO 14001 principles.
Skills and Competence
- Strong leadership and stakeholder management skills.
- Excellent communication and influencing abilities, including engagement with external regulators and industry stakeholders.
- Advanced analytical and reporting skills using Excel, Power BI, and environmental data management systems.
- Proven ability to identify root causes, implement corrective actions, and deliver measurable environmental improvements.
