POSITION OVERVIEW

Our client is seeking an experienced Lead Estimator to join the fabrication team in Grimsby on a contract basis. The successful candidate will lead a small estimating department responsible for preparing competitive and accurate estimates for structural steelwork and pipework fabrication projects. This role combines strong technical estimating capability with leadership, commercial awareness and close collaboration with operations and clients.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leadership & Estimating Management
    • Lead, mentor and support the estimating team to ensure consistency, accuracy and timely submission of bids.
    • Assign bid packages, prioritise workload and report progress to management.
    • Run weekly estimating meetings to define outstanding actions, discuss new estimates and review current bids.
    • Work closely with the fabrication workshop and project teams to discuss upcoming workload.
    • Be responsible for monthly estimating reports.
  • Tendering & Commercial Activities
    • Review tender documentation to identify commercial risks, exclusions and opportunities.
    • Support pricing strategy and bid adjudication with senior management.
    • Ensure estimates align with operational capability, execution approach and commercial objectives.
    • Prepare and manage estimate/bid packages ensuring all required documentation is included.
    • Determine bid response strategies including scheduling approach, execution plans, and subcontractor requirements.
  • Estimating & Technical Duties
    • Develop and manage estimate plans across plating as the primary discipline, with support to piping estimates as required.
    • Prepare discipline-by-discipline quantity take-offs including plating, structural fabrication and installation, and piping materials and installation.
    • Complete detailed cost calculations including direct labour, materials, equipment, rentals, subcontracts, and indirect costs.
    • Develop detailed indirect cost estimates for both on-site and off-site support activities.
    • Support piping estimating activities including review of isometrics, piping specifications, MTOs, and labour and material pricing.
    • Interpret fabrication isometrics, GA drawings and specifications and convert them into accurate cost estimates.
    • Attend client site walkdowns to understand proposed scopes of work.
  • Subcontractor & Client Coordination
    • Work with subcontractors to prepare and issue RFQ packages for work not completed internally.
    • Define subcontract scopes, drawings, specifications and documentation requirements.
    • Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors.
    • Coordinate with other departments and offices as required.
    • Conduct estimate reviews with senior management.
    • Compile work packages upon successful award for shop and site works.
    • Produce proposal documentation to support winning bids for Worley Field Services.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Experience leading or mentoring estimating personnel.
  • Strong commercial awareness and understanding of fabrication project delivery.
  • Detailed understanding and experience in plating fabrication activities.
  • Working knowledge of piping scope and estimating principles.
  • Ability to read and interpret fabrication isometrics, GA drawings, piping drawings, specifications, and MTOs.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Experience supporting bid adjudications with senior management and interfacing with clients.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel and Word.
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated and resourceful.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple bids simultaneously.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience using computerized estimating systems.
  • Understanding of project execution planning and critical path scheduling.
  • Mechanical and structural knowledge including piping experience.
