About the Role
FIRST Plumbing & Heating-UK Ltd is looking for an experienced Gas Boiler Breakdown & Installation Engineer with excellent diagnostic and fault-finding skills.
The main focus of the role is attending boiler breakdowns, accurately diagnosing faults and completing safe, effective repairs. The engineer will also carry out boiler servicing, central heating repairs and boiler installations when required.
We are looking for a genuine fault-finding engineer who understands how boilers and heating systems operate, rather than someone who simply replaces parts until a fault disappears.
Main ResponsibilitiesBoiler Breakdowns & Fault Finding
You will be expected to:
- Attend domestic gas boiler breakdowns.
- Diagnose faults accurately and methodically.
- Carry out electrical and mechanical fault finding.
- Diagnose intermittent and recurring boiler faults.
- Identify failed components and, where possible, establish why they have failed.
- Repair boilers safely and efficiently.
- Identify required replacement parts accurately.
- Test appliance operation following repairs.
- Check relevant safety devices and controls.
- Diagnose ignition and flame-detection faults.
- Diagnose fans, gas valves, PCBs, pumps, sensors and controls.
- Investigate system pressure problems.
- Diagnose expansion vessel and PRV faults.
- Investigate poor heating and hot-water performance.
- Diagnose circulation problems, airlocks and restrictions.
- Diagnose pumps, motorised valves, thermostats, programmers and zone controls.
- Check flues and condensate arrangements.
- Carry out combustion analysis and gas-rate checks where required.
- Carry out appropriate gas-safety checks.
Boiler Servicing
You will also carry out boiler servicing, including:
- Servicing appliances in accordance with manufacturer instructions.
- Combustion analysis.
- Checking safety devices.
- Inspecting relevant seals and components.
- Checking flue integrity and termination.
- Checking condensate arrangements.
- Checking system pressure and expansion arrangements.
- Testing heating controls.
- Identifying existing or developing faults.
- Recording readings and findings accurately.
- Reporting recommended remedial work.
Boiler Installation
The successful candidate must have boiler installation experience and should be confident carrying out:
- Combi boiler replacements.
- System and heat-only boiler replacements where competent.
- Boiler relocations where appropriate.
- Flue installation and alterations.
- Condensate installation.
- Gas pipework alterations and upgrades.
- Heating flow and return alterations.
- Hot and cold-water pipework.
- Magnetic filter installation.
- Heating control installation.
- System flushing and chemical treatment.
- Filling, testing and commissioning.
- Completion of appropriate commissioning documentation.
Installation work must be completed to a professional standard. Pipework should be appropriately routed, clipped and supported, and boilers must be installed and commissioned in accordance with applicable requirements and manufacturer instructions.
If an installation differs significantly from the agreed scope, the engineer must contact the office before carrying out significant additional work.
Central Heating Experience
The engineer should be confident diagnosing and repairing:
- Radiator problems.
- Poor circulation.
- Airlocks.
- Pump faults.
- Motorised valves.
- Zone controls.
- Thermostatic radiator valves.
- System pressure faults.
- Expansion vessels.
- Heating system leaks.
- Heating controls.
- Associated heating pipework.
Gas Safety
Gas safety is non-negotiable.
The engineer must:
- Hold current Gas Safe qualifications appropriate to the work undertaken.
- Hold relevant domestic ACS qualifications.
- Work in accordance with applicable gas-safety legislation, standards and manufacturer instructions.
- Correctly identify and deal with unsafe situations.
- Complete appropriate warning notices and documentation where required.
- Never leave an appliance operating where it would be unsafe.
- Never undertake gas work outside their qualifications or competence.
- Record safety-related findings accurately.
- Escalate serious safety concerns immediately.
Customer Service
Our engineers represent FIRST Plumbing & Heating-UK Ltd in customers' homes and businesses.
You must:
- Be polite, professional and presentable.
- Communicate clearly with customers.
- Explain faults in straightforward language.
- Protect customers' property while working.
- Use appropriate floor and work-area protection.
- Keep work areas clean and tidy.
- Treat customers and their property with respect.
- Explain when further work is required.
- Avoid promising prices, parts availability or return dates unless confirmed.
- Refer additional chargeable work through the company.
Job Reporting
Accurate job reporting is an essential part of the position.
Engineers must record appropriate:
- Job notes.
- Fault diagnosis.
- Work completed.
- Parts used.
- Parts required.
- Boiler make and model.
- Serial numbers where relevant.
- Combustion readings where applicable.
- Gas-safety findings.
- Photographs.
- Recommendations.
- Follow-on work requirements.
The office should receive enough information to order parts, prepare quotations or arrange follow-on work without another visit simply to collect information that should have been recorded.
Photographic Evidence
Where appropriate, photographs should include:
- Appliance.
- Data badge.
- Flue.
- Condensate.
- Gas pipework.
- Relevant components.
- Existing defects.
- Failed parts.
- Unsafe situations.
- Completed repairs or installation work.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
Candidates should have:
- Current Gas Safe qualifications appropriate to the role.
- Relevant domestic ACS qualifications.
- Proven boiler breakdown experience.
- Excellent diagnostic and fault-finding ability.
- Boiler servicing experience.
- Boiler installation experience.
- Strong central heating knowledge.
- Combustion analyser experience.
- Heating controls knowledge.
- Basic electrical fault-finding ability.
- Ability to use a multimeter correctly.
- Ability to understand wiring diagrams.
- Ability to use manufacturer technical information and fault codes.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Ability to work independently.
- Good customer communication skills.
- Ability to use a smartphone or tablet for job reporting.
Desirable Experience
Additional experience or qualifications in the following would be advantageous:
- Commercial gas.
- G3 Unvented Hot Water.
- Manufacturer training.
- LPG.
- Electrical fault finding.
- Smart heating controls.
- Manufacturer or warranty repair work.
- Home-emergency or insurance breakdown work.
Experience across manufacturers such as Vaillant, Worcester Bosch, Viessmann, Glow-worm, Ideal, Baxi, Potterton, Main, Alpha and Intergas would be particularly useful.
The Engineer We Want
