Overview
First Military Recruitment are currently seeking a Learning Support and Assessment Specialist on behalf of one of our clients. The main purpose of the role is to coordinate screening, assessment and access arrangements for students with specific learning difficulties. Our client encourages applications from ex‐military personnel but all candidates will be given due consideration.
Duties and Responsibilities
- To undertake the role of college exam access arrangement specialist.
- To provide advice to students and conduct screenings as necessary, monitoring student progress and maintaining appropriate records.
- To plan, develop, manage and monitor the overall process of screening, referrals to educational psychologists, disabled student allowance (DSA) applications and needs assessments.
- To liaise with the course teams about the needs of students.
- To liaise with schools/parents to gain evidence of exam access arrangements at previous school/college.
- To attain (and keep up to date) relevant qualifications which allow the post holder to undertake the role as exam access assessor.
- To assist with planning and delivery of staff development to heighten awareness about exams access and more generic specific learning difficulties and other disabilities.
- To maintain strong links with related professional bodies, keeping up to date with the latest developments in the field of exam access arrangements, learning difficulties and disabilities.
- To support the Head of Learning Support in the management of additional support for students.
- To produce reports of assessments to support students application for special arrangements in examinations.
- To inform the exams department of students requiring exam access arrangements in a timely manner.
- To teach students with specific learning difficulties.
- Prepare schemes of work, lesson plans and resource materials for teaching programmes.
- Utilise IT and learning technology to deliver elements of the curriculum.
- Where appropriate, integrate the delivery of Maths and English.
- Prepare assessment plans and schedules and ensure students are aware of your expectations.
- Implement support systems.
- Participate in the evaluation of the effectiveness of teaching and learning.
- Attend learning support team meetings and college events as directed by managers.
- Keep records up to date, including the completion of registers, and tracking documentation in line with ALS procedures.
- Participate in the college's staff appraisal system.
- Carry out student questionnaires and elicit student feedback.
- Contribute to the course reviews.
- Set targets for achievement, retention and attendance and participate in the college's performance management programme.
- Participate in additional activities, such as projects on the improvement of teaching and learning.
- Participate in open evenings and recruitment activities.
- Interview potential applicants.
- Contribute to the development, promotion and delivery of the college's marketing and recruitment strategies.
- Carry out student inductions and contribute to the design of induction programmes.
- Carry out progress reviews, including the completion of necessary documents.
- Where appropriate, ensure that initial and diagnostic assessments are undertaken and that students receive effective learning support.
- Ensure that resources within your subject area are kept up to date and accessible to students and other staff in liaison with the curriculum managers and the college's learning centres.
- Prepare students for employability, career progression and/or further education and training.
- Product reports and attend events to provide information to parents/employers.
- Participate in the college's formal lesson observation process on an annual basis.
- Keep knowledge and skills up to date through self-study and undertake staff development and secondments relevant to professional needs.
- Participate in the school's staff development programme.
- Promote equal opportunities and implement the college's equal opportunities policy.
- Provide a secure, safe and friendly learning environment.
- Complete all documents necessary to comply with college personnel policies.
- Carry out any other duties commensurate with the scale and grade of the post.
- Understand and comply with safeguarding legislation and ensure that best practice is embedded in all working practices as required.
Skills and Qualifications
- A degree or equivalent level qualification.
- A relevant specialist dyslexia qualification in the assessment of support of students with SPLD (Dyslexia) e.g. OCR L7 Diploma in SPLD, PG Dip ADDS, MA SPLD, including a current practising certificate or certificate of competence, or willingness to undertake this qualification.
- A full, minimum Level 5 teaching qualification recognised by the Further Education sector (e.g. DET, PGCE).
- Experience of teaching and supporting students with specific learning difficulties.
- Excellent organisational and administrative skills and ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to communicate and interact effectively with learners and their parents/carers.
- Awareness and understanding of disability and equality legislation.
- Good understanding of equality and diversity and safeguarding in education.
- Up-to-date knowledge of the relevant subject area.
