Staff Manager – Leicester Depot

The Staff Manager will support and deputise for the Operations Manager, managing all aspects of depot operational performance on a full‑time permanent basis.

The role involves overseeing on‑time performance, customer experience, and compliance with legislative, process and policy requirements within an operational excellence framework.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the depot operations team in line with First Group policies, standard operating procedures and relevant legislation.
  • Work with the Training function to ensure competent training and achievement of establishment requirements.
  • Manage driver performance and conduct job chats.
  • Induct, develop and retain an engaged, high‑performing operations team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Conduct disciplinary, grievance or absence management reviews in line with Company policy.
  • Maintain accurate records for all operational standards and performance, including employee records.
  • Collaborate with service performance team members to maintain a consistent customer experience.
  • Improve operational performance, focusing on lost miles and punctuality to meet key performance indicators.
  • Manage supervisors to create alternative disruption plans and provide relevant information to stakeholders.
  • Act as local custodian and point of contact for maintenance fault diagnosis and other service performance systems.
  • Ensure effective collaboration between operational and engineering teams.
  • Deliver performance improvement plans and manage operational costs within budget.
  • Comply with requisition to pay procedures and delegated authorities.
  • Maintain effective relationships with recognised trade union representatives and officials.
  • Carry out other duties as deemed appropriate by the line manager.

Skills & Experience

  • Previous management or supervisory experience (bus/transport industry preferred).
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Professional knowledge of the Road Traffic Act and employment legislation.
  • Ability to lead and inspire people to adopt operational best practice.
  • Strong planning and prioritising skills.
  • Self‑motivated with a positive approach to change.
