Are you a hands-on Engineering Manager ready to lead a team that keeps London's fleet safe, efficient, and on the road? We're looking for a passionate, organised, and results-driven leader to oversee the engineering operations at our Tolworth garage ensuring every vehicle is maintained to the highest standards of reliability, safety, and presentation. As part of our senior engineering management team, you'll play a key role in delivering a world-class transport service by managing resources, developing people, and driving continuous improvement across your department.

What You'll Do

  • Ensure all engineering staff understand and comply with company policies, Health & Safety, and statutory regulations.
  • Guarantee the daily peak vehicle requirement is met, ensuring all vehicles are clean, reliable, and VOSA-compliant.
  • Oversee maintenance, environmental, and health & safety compliance across company premises.
  • Lead and develop your team - managing recruitment, training, performance, and pay in line with company policies and union agreements.
  • Build and manage the engineering budget, driving cost efficiency and reducing waste.
  • Oversee vehicle maintenance scheduling, minimising lost mileage and improving fleet reliability.
  • Deliver effective record keeping and administrative processes, ensuring accurate documentation.
  • Collaborate closely with Operations to address issues swiftly and maintain service quality.
  • Drive continuous improvement by reviewing department performance and introducing innovative ideas.
  • Maintain high standards of workshop housekeeping, ensuring all equipment and premises are safe, tidy, and well-maintained.
  • Promote a strong safety culture, ensuring robust risk assessments, compliance with legislation, and full H&S reporting.

About You

You're a proactive engineering professional with a strong technical background and the ability to lead by example. You thrive in a fast-paced, hands-on environment and know how to get the best out of your team.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Proven experience as a Manager, Supervisor, or Charge Hand in a transport engineering function (ideally buses).
  • Strong people management skills with the ability to motivate, coach, and manage performance.
  • Excellent engineering knowledge with consistently high work standards.
  • Competent IT user – especially Excel and MS Outlook.
  • Experience managing budgets, reporting on variances, and delivering cost efficiencies.
  • Relevant Health & Safety Management qualification.

Desirable:

  • Full and current driving licence (PCV an advantage).
  • Logical and analytical thinker with excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Highly organised, detail-focused, and calm under pressure.
