Hours: 27.5 hours per week, Monday-Friday, 08:00-13:30

Location: Swadlincote, DE11 8EA

As an in house caterer, your role is to manage the daily operations of the workplace kitchen and tuck shop. This role is responsible for planning, preparing, and cooking fresh food (such as sandwiches, salads, pasta etc.) for employees to purchase throughout the week, while maintaining strict food safety compliance and managing point-of-sale transactions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Food Preparation & Cooking: Support with planning, preparing, and cooking a rotating weekly menu of nutritious hot meals and lunch specials. Prepare fresh grab-and-go options daily, including pre-made sandwiches, paninis, salads, and snacks. Ensure all food is presented attractively and maintained at correct temperatures during service hours. Accommodate basic dietary requirements and allergen restrictions where possible.
  • Kitchen Management & Stock Control: Manage the rotation of kitchen inventory (using the FIFO - First In, First Out method) to ensure freshness and minimise food waste. Reconcile purchases made, handle the ordering/purchasing of fresh ingredients and dry stock within an agreed budget. Receive, check, and safely store stock deliveries.
  • Point of Sale & Customer Service: Provide a friendly, welcoming, and efficient service to all employees. Operate the cash box, card machine, or digital till point to record and process daily sales accurately. Keep all areas clean and tidy, well-stocked, and cleanly presented throughout the day.
  • Hygiene, Health & Safety: Maintain impeccable cleanliness across the entire kitchen, food prep areas, utensils, and serving counters. Strictly adhere to the Food Safety Act 1990 and HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) guidelines. Accurately maintain daily kitchen diligence paperwork, including fridge/freezer temperature logs, hot-holding records, and cleaning rotas.

Skills & Experience

  • Experience: Previous experience working as a cook, catering assistant, or kitchen lead in a commercial kitchen, office canteen, cafΓ©, or school environment.
  • Certifications: A current Level 2 Food Hygiene & Safety Certificate is highly preferred (or must be obtained upon hire).
  • Autonomy: Proven ability to work independently, manage time effectively during peak lunch rushes, and take initiative without constant supervision.
  • Customer Skills: Strong interpersonal skills for a customer-facing role within the workplace.
  • Numeracy: Basic numeracy skills for stock control and cash handling.
