Salary: Up to £40,000 per annum

Hours: 50 hours per week, Monday to Friday between 07:00‑20:00

Location: Bristol, BS3 5RB

Position: Assistant Manager

As an Assistant Manager you will oversee the full scope of depot activities, providing essential support to the Depot Manager to ensure operational efficiency, inventory accuracy and the timely dispatch of goods. You will help manage a team, optimise processes and maintain a safe, well‑organised working environment while collaborating with other departments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Customer Service: Work closely with our customer services & sales team, assisting them with enquiries and orders related to the operational side.
  • Inventory Management: Assist with stock control and inventory management, including receiving and booking purchase orders, stock takes, and regular stock checks, identifying discrepancies.
  • Depot Operations: Support the Depot Manager in overseeing smooth depot operations, maintaining a clean and safe environment.
  • Transport Operations: Assist with routing deliveries to ensure they are cost‑effective, on time and comply with all relevant transport regulations.
  • Health & Safety: Adhere to all health and safety regulations and procedures, enforce them to promote a safe working environment for all employees.
  • Managing People: Support the Depot Manager in managing the performance of depot colleagues, providing guidance and identifying training needs.
  • Employee Relations: Address employee concerns, resolve workplace issues by being a point of call and collaborating with all, contributing to a positive and inclusive work environment.

Requirements

  • Accurately and efficiently process orders and deliveries on time.
  • Handle customer complaints professionally and promptly.
  • Ensure accurate and timely recording of all stock movements.
  • Be available to open and close the depot where required.
  • Communicate effectively with drivers and customers regarding delivery schedules.
  • Address all compliance issues and report hazards.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, proactively managing accounts and making outbound calls.
  • Assist with recruitment and selection processes.
  • Monitor KPIs to identify areas for improvement.
  • Assist with implementation of company policies and procedures.

Skills and Experience

  • FLT licence essential.
  • Experience and understanding of HR issues (e.g., performance, return‑to‑work meetings).
  • Proven ability to plan, organise and prioritise workloads and meet deadlines.
  • SAP experience advantageous.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to manage change.
