First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO) have an exciting opportunity for a General Builder- Groundworker to join our Property Care team and help us deliver high quality repairs and maintenance across our homes and communities. This is a full-time role working across our Oldham properties, where you'll play a vital part in ensuring our customers' homes are safe, secure and maintained to a high standard.
The impact you'll make
In this role, you'll carry out a wide range of brickwork, groundworks and associated building repairs across occupied and void properties. You'll work within a pre-allocated appointment system, diagnosing issues and aiming to complete repairs right first time wherever possible. Your work will directly improve the quality of our customers' homes and neighbourhoods, supporting safe and sustainable tenancies.
Responsibilities & Deliverables
- Carry out all aspects of groundworks including excavation, drainage, landscaping, paths, driveways, kerbs, minor concreting, reinstatement and surface repairs.
- Complete brickwork and masonry tasks including bricklaying, repointing, rendering, wall repairs and boundary reinstatement.
- Install, maintain and repair property boundaries including walls, fencing, gates, gate posts, handrails, bollards and safety barriers.
- Undertake patch plastering including float and set, skim, plasterboard and skim, and cut out and re-plaster cracks to walls.
- Remove and replace thermoplastic floor tiles.
- Refit or realign gutters including plastic, cast iron and timber, and carry out minor roofline repairs where required.
- Renew flashings and soakers in lead.
- Install and maintain surface water drainage systems including gullies, channel drains and Aco drains.
- Carry out damp and mould washes and treatments in line with organisational procedures.
- Complete void property external repairs, make-safe works and estate improvement tasks including communal paving, edging and minor landscaping.
- Conduct pre- and post-works inspections, identify hazards such as trip risks or loose masonry, and report additional repairs or asbestos risks via PDA systems.
- Maintain safe systems of work and ensure compliance with health and safety legislation, risk assessments, method statements and COSHH procedures.
- Work respectfully within occupied homes, maintaining cleanliness, clear communication and excellent customer care before, during and after repairs.
- Assist other trades when required and support multi-trade responsive maintenance activities.
- Complete accurate records, job updates and photographic evidence using PDAs and electronic systems.
You'll work collaboratively with colleagues and apprentices, take pride in your workmanship and contribute to a culture of safety, quality and continuous improvement.
Our ideal candidate
You'll be an experienced and skilled builder who takes pride in delivering high quality repairs and excellent customer service.
You will bring:
- A relevant construction trade qualification such as NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Bricklaying, or equivalent proven experience.
- Strong experience in brickwork, repointing, rendering and general masonry.
- Experience in excavation, drainage and external groundworks.
- Experience laying and repairing paths, kerbs and driveways.
- Experience with fencing, gates and boundary repairs.
- Competence in patch plastering and associated minor works.
- Good knowledge of health and safety legislation and safe systems of work.
- Experience working in occupied properties and dealing directly with customers.
- A full UK driving licence.
