First Actuarial has been around since 2004, when a small group of like-minded actuaries came together to bring fresh thinking to pensions consultancy. More than two decades later, our strong growth path has continued year on year, and we now employ over 500 people across seven locations. First Actuarial is now a Gallagher company and we’re excited about our joint prospects. We shape our high-quality services by listening closely to our clients’ needs. And we price those services fairly. As we develop our business, opportunities for our people grow. Our Basingstoke, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Peterborough, Tonbridge, and London offices provide supportive work environments where everyone can make a difference. We enjoy work and celebrate our successes. And we provide support and helpful feedback, so we all learn and improve. We love numbers, but we love people more. Staff wellbeing and work-life balance have always been core values. Beyond the firm, we’re known for our integrity. We’re happy to challenge conventional thinking and speak up. Our pioneering work is set to transform the lives of millions of younger people with a new type of pension.
Internship Programme
We run an 8-week paid summer internship programme that offers great training and work experience allowing you to get a good understanding of the role of an Investment Consultant. You will learn how our firm operates and get to meet colleagues from across the firm, including our Associate Partners and Partners. You will have a dedicated learning buddy to support your internship. For 2026, we have investment internship openings in our Leeds and Tonbridge offices.
What do investment consultants do?
Investment consultants use numeracy skills and financial market knowledge to help clients with their investment decisions; designing suitable investment portfolios that balance returns with the risks that individual clients can afford to run. As the majority of our clients are pension scheme trustees, the service we offer and advice we give takes into account the need to balance the investment strategy with the pension scheme liabilities.
What will I be doing on a day-to-day basis?
Although it sounds like a cliché, no two days will be the same. As an investment intern, you’ll be working with a range of clients. Initially, you’ll be involved in our excellent investment research and performance reporting as well as producing bespoke client advice and carrying out investment modelling. You’ll learn about managing client relationships, attending client meetings and get to grips with how we present and discuss our advice firsthand. You will also work on your own strategy review project and present the results to colleagues. This is a fantastic opportunity to put into practice what you are learning in the internship and consider the merits of different approaches to investment strategy.
“It’s been an incredibly rewarding experience and I’ve gained a real insight into what it means to be an investment consultant – from advising pension scheme trustees on long‑term investment strategy to diving into the operational side of implementation and monitoring. I’ve come away with a much deeper understanding of both the technical and relational aspects of the role and a real appreciation for the scale and impact of the pensions sector.” Baitao Chen, Investment Team Summer Intern 2025
