We\’re Hiring: Information Governance Manager (Deputy DPO)

Firebird is an established consultancy providing outsourced data protection and information governance services to schools, commercial clients and charities. We\’re looking for a skilled Information Governance Manager (Deputy DPO) to join our team on a part-time basis (0.5 FTE), working remotely with flexible hours and the opportunity to make a genuine difference to our growing client base.
What You’ll Do
As a key member of our consultancy team, you’ll:
- Act as Deputy Data Protection Officer for a portfolio of clients.
- Provide clear, practical advice on data protection, privacy, and information governance issues.
- Lead on data breach response, SARs, DPIAs, and compliance audits.
- Deliver tailored training (live and recorded), policy development, and strategic guidance.
- Support clients with emerging issues like the ethical and lawful use of AI, machine learning, and automated decision-making.
- Build strong, trusted relationships with clients and be a visible brand ambassador for Firebird—including contributing to events, webinars, and our social media content.
- Line manage the Information Governance Officer to ensure excellent service delivery across our projects.
✅ What You Bring
Essential:
- 5+ years\’ experience in a data protection advisory role.
- A recognised qualification (e.g. CIPP/E, CIPM, BCS Practitioner Certificate).
- Strong working knowledge of UK GDPR, DPA 2018, and ICO expectations.
- Excellent communication skills and confidence advising at all levels.
- Ability to build long-term client relationships based on trust and credibility.
- Awareness of the data protection and ethical considerations of AI and automation.
- A strong work ethic, self-motivation, and ability to thrive both independently and as part of a team.
Desirable:
- Consultancy or outsourced service experience in education or commercial sectors.
- Familiarity with school data systems (e.g. MIS platforms).
- Knowledge of PECR, overseas data transfers, and records management best practice.
- Understanding of cybersecurity standards such as ISO 27001 or Cyber Essentials Plus.
