Our pipeline ranges from landmark commercial high rise to regulated nuclear facilities – and as part of our strategic development we require a experienced fire engineer who can lead projects, mentor a talented team and help shape our next phase of expansion. You will be joining a team of technically proficient and highly motivated fire engineers, dedicated to delivering rigorous, compliant solutions and advancing best practice across the fire safety engineering profession.
Location: Manchester – office based with travel to sites when required
Salary: Package commensurate with industry experience and competency + benefits
What you’ll do
- Deliver fire-safety solutions – author holistic fire-strategy reports, risk assessments and bespoke performance-based designs (first-principles, CFD/smoke & evacuation modelling, risk and cost-benefit analysis).
- Own client relationships – act as the primary technical contact, interfacing with architects, insurers, regulators and Fire & Rescue Services.
- Manage projects & people – plan programmes, control budgets and coach graduate and mid-level engineers.
- Assure compliance – interpret and apply UK legislation, British/European Standards, NFPA codes and insurer requirements; peer-review design information and contractors’ submissions.
- Conduct peer reviews – independently review and critique fire engineering reports and designs authored by other engineers to ensure technical accuracy, consistency, and alignment with best practice and project scope.
- Site engagement – carry out UK-wide site inspections (construction & operational) to verify installation quality and fire-risk controls.
- Drive innovation – contribute to R&D, special-interest groups and internal CPD to keep our practice at the cutting edge.
What you’ll bring
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) – or equivalent or working towards.
- Master’s degree (or BEng + significant experience) in fire, mechanical, civil or another relevant engineering/science discipline.
- Proven track record (5 + years) of developing performance-based fire strategies and modelling solutions for complex buildings or high-hazard industries.
- Deep knowledge of:
- UK fire-safety legislation, ADB/ADB-SC, BS 9999/9991, BS 7974 and Eurocodes.
- Water-based suppression systems, hydrant networks, foam and deluge design (including hydraulic calculations).
- Fire- and smoke-modelling software, Bluebeam, CAD/BIM workflows.
- Demonstrable experience leading multi-disciplinary teams and presenting to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Full UK driving license and willingness to travel.
- Excellent verbal and written English – able to produce clear, concise and authoritative reports.
- Must be willing to undertake an audit during the interview process
Highly desirable to have
- Nuclear, energy or other regulated-industry experience plus related clearances (SC/DV) will be essential to role. Role will depend upon successful clearance at a minimum of SC.
- Evidence of volunteering or committee work within IFE/NFPA or similar professional bodies.
- Bid writing, fee proposal and business-development exposure.
What we offer
- Impact & autonomy – you’ll be #1 or #2 on every project, not a small cog in a huge machine.
- Professional growth – dedicated CPD budget, paid memberships, conference attendance and support toward Fellow status.
- Flexible working – hybrid model, core hours and option to base yourself in any of our regional hubs.
- Competitive package – salary benchmarked at the upper quartile, car allowance, matched pension, performance bonus, private healthcare and 25 days holiday (+ buy/sell scheme).
