Purpose of Position

The R&D Design Engineer is responsible for the research, development, testing, and continual improvement of new and existing equipment and technologies. The role focuses on transforming conceptual ideas and operational challenges into robust, manufacturable engineering solutions through design, analysis, prototyping, and validation. Working closely with cross-functional teams, the R&D Design Engineer supports innovation initiatives, investigates new technologies and materials, and ensures developed solutions meet performance, safety, quality, and regulatory requirements prior to deployment into live projects.

Role specific responsibilities

  • Research & Concept Development: Research and evaluate new engineering concepts, technologies, materials, and manufacturing methods to support product innovation and performance improvement. Support feasibility studies, proof-of-concept activities, and early-stage design investigations.
  • Detailed Design: Design new equipment and develop improvements to existing products using 3D and 2D CAD (SolidWorks/AutoCAD), from concept through to detailed design. Produce detailed component and assembly models, drawings, and layouts suitable for manufacture, testing, and deployment. Modify and refine designs based on testing outcomes, performance data, and internal/external feedback.
  • Prototyping, Testing and Validation: Support the build of prototypes, test rigs, and development equipment. Assist with functional testing, performance validation, and design verification activities.
  • Technical Documentation: Produce and maintain R&D documentation including design reports, test reports, technical specifications, and development records. Support the creation of manuals, technical files, and spares documentation as designs mature.
  • Compliance and Quality Assurance: Ensure all designs comply with applicable engineering standards, regulatory requirements, and internal quality processes. Support risk assessments, FMEA activities, and design-for-safety principles. Contribute to design reviews and change control processes.
  • Health, Safety & Environment: You have a duty to take care of your own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by your actions at work. You will carry out assigned tasks and duties in a safe manner, in accordance with instructions, and comply with all Health, Safety & Environmental rules, policy, procedures, regulations, and codes of practice. • Understanding of manufacturing processes, material properties, and design limitations.
  • Problem-solving mindset with the ability to apply engineering fundamentals to novel challenges.
  • Understanding of pneumatics, hydraulics, and electrical systems, desirable.
  • Competent with Microsoft Office for reporting and documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and manage tasks through the development lifecycle.
  • Strong communication skills, capable of conveying technical concepts clearly to varied audiences.
