We are looking for a skilled Design Engineer to support the design, calculation and specification of customised projects for Finning using the latest 3D software.

The Design Engineer will create detailed 3D models, production drawings, operator manuals and compliance documentation, supporting a wide range of applications across civil, mechanical, electrical, marine, and construction equipment, ensuring all engineered solutions meet the required standards, legislation and customer expectations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create general arrangement designs and detailed manufacturing drawings for specialised modifications, attachments and work tools for new and used Civil, Marine and Defence equipment.
  • Design and develop components, hydraulic systems and assemblies using engineering calculation methods and sound design principles.
  • Design and develop site layouts with emphasis on construction cost, fitness for purpose, safety and ease of maintenance (Including site visits/surveys as required).
  • Select, specify and integrate third-party components into full bespoke solutions.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of legislation by liaising with Caterpillar, HSE and ISO advisory groups.
  • Support the approval process for non-standard attachments and customised machine orders within the Supply Chain team.
  • Work closely with sales teams, project engineers and customers to define requirements and produce tailored engineering solutions.
  • Prepare accurate costings for fabrication, parts and engineering labour.
  • Carry out onsite component measurement and assessments to help define design requirements.
  • Produce high-quality operation and maintenance manuals for attachments and complete machine solutions.
  • Manage drawing control, technical files and ensure full regulatory compliance.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement appropriate risk control measures.
Knowledge, Skills & ExperienceEssential
  • Relevant design office experience, or an Engineering Degree plus at least 3 years’ design office experience.
  • Experience using 3D modelling software such as Inventor, SolidWorks or equivalent.
  • PLM Data management and document control experience within the Autodesk Vault environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of CE legislation including BSEN 474, Earthmoving Machinery Safety and Machine Directive 2006/46/EC.
  • Competent in completing and documenting risk assessments.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Understanding of PUWER regulations, BSEN 474, BSI B/513/1, ISO TC127 and ISO 9000.
  • Ability to produce compliant machine technical files including CE certification and supporting documentation.
Desirable
  • Experience writing operation and maintenance manuals.
  • Practical experience in design or fabrication within the heavy equipment industry.
