We are looking for a technically skilled and customer-focused Application Engineer to provide engineering expertise across the full project lifecycle, from initial bid development through to final installation sign-off.

The Application Engineer is a key role supporting the design, integration and delivery of Caterpillar engine packages and associated third-party equipment for industrial customers.

Job Description

Working closely with Sales, OEM engineering teams, Caterpillar and customers, the Application Engineer will be responsible for developing robust, cost-effective engineering solutions, conducting installation audits and ensuring compliance with Caterpillar application guidelines.

You will manage a portfolio of key industrial accounts, lead technical discussions and oversee the successful delivery of multiple projects and engine installations each year.

This position offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced engineer who combines strong technical knowledge with commercial awareness, project management capability and a passion for delivering exceptional customer solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical application support for sales opportunities, contributing engineering expertise to the development of customer proposals and bids.
  • Collaborate with Sales, OEM engineering teams, Caterpillar and internal design teams to develop application solutions that meet customer requirements.
  • Identify and communicate potential revenue-generating opportunities and value-added solutions.
  • Design and support the integration of third-party equipment into engine and turnkey package applications.
  • Contribute to the design, development and validation of engineered components and systems.
  • Review and approve engineering drawings and designs, ensuring compliance, quality and technical integrity.
  • Act as the primary technical liaison between Caterpillar, OEMs, customers and internal stakeholders, resolving technical issues throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Plan, conduct and document full engine installation audits in accordance with Caterpillar requirements.
  • Manage a portfolio of key industrial accounts, providing technical leadership for engineering activities, customer visits, site audits and technical meetings.
  • Oversee projects from concept through to final installation sign-off, ensuring technical, commercial and operational objectives are met.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed technical documentation, including calculations, bills of materials, installation instructions, audit reports, drawings and project approvals.
  • Undertake detailed on-site testing, troubleshooting and commissioning support as required.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of engine technologies, emissions legislation and industry developments through ongoing training and professional development.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Degree in Engineering, HND qualification, apprenticeship route qualification, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical engineering knowledge.
  • Experience of engine systems, engine applications and engine installations.
  • Understanding of engine integration into OEM equipment or machinery.
  • Experience reviewing technical drawings and engineering documentation.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage confidently with customers, suppliers and internal stakeholders.
  • Experience presenting technical solutions in customer-facing environments.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects from concept through to completion.
  • Commercial awareness and an understanding of project cost implications.
  • Proficiency with engineering software and CAD packages.
  • Basic understanding of CAN network systems.
  • Ability and willingness to travel and undertake detailed site-based testing and audits.

Desirable Experience

  • Knowledge of Caterpillar engines and application requirements.
  • Experience within the Industrial, Electric Power, Marine or Oil & Gas sectors.
  • Experience of component design, development and validation.
  • Previous experience conducting installation audits and technical compliance reviews.
