FJA are recruiting on behalf of a leading service provider in the utilities industry for an experienced Principal Civil Engineer to strengthen their team.

Principal Civil Engineer Role:
In this role, you will report to the Central Discipline Lead (Civil) and be accountable for delivering high-quality engineering design services that help minimise risk and maximise profitability across turnkey and engineering services contracts. You will coordinate all design activities and produce accurate design documents and drawings, ensuring full compliance with health and safety requirements, contract specifications, and all relevant standards.
Principal Civil Engineer Responsibilities:
- Produce cost-effective design layouts that meet specification requirements and can be constructed and commissioned efficiently.
- Maintain competitiveness in all design activities.
- Provide estimates and technical feedback to the Proposals department.
- Follow established procedures and processes to support continual departmental development.
- Contribute to the creation and improvement of departmental procedures and processes.
- Monitor, review, and update procedures to support efficient departmental operations.
- Ensure design coordination with all internal and external disciplines so that contract design processes are aligned and beneficial to the overall project.
- Maintain accurate files and records throughout each contract.
- Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction.
- Promote a culture where meeting customer needs—both external clients and internal departments is central to achieving wider business objectives.
- Maintain and update a personal development plan.
- Assist in supervising and developing staff, including undertaking some line-management duties.
- Support junior engineers by checking and reviewing technical drawings and documentation.
- Contribute to maintaining a safe working environment for all staff.
- Minimise waste across all departmental activities.
- Ensure designs consider environmental impacts.
- Ensure all designs fully comply with health and safety requirements.
Principal Civil Engineer Requirements:
- Extensive experience in civil design within the water and process industries.
- Strong understanding of water and wastewater treatment principles.
- Proven experience managing staff involved in designing civil aspects of water and sewage treatment plants.
- Membership of a relevant professional institution and/or chartered status.
- Degree in an appropriate engineering discipline.
- Ability to rationalise designs and develop cost-effective plant layouts.
- Broad knowledge of water treatment disciplines, including mechanical, process, electrical engineering, and project management.
- Flexible, with the ability to interpret and integrate large volumes of information.
- Strong skills in presenting technical proposals clearly, confidently, and persuasively.
- Proficient in computer applications.
- Full driving licence.
