An excellent opportunity has arisen for a clinically credible Clinical Specialist to support the use of specialist orthopaedic surgical devices across hospitals in Devon and Cornwall. This role would suit an experienced Operating Department Practitioner, Theatre Scrub Nurse with orthopaedic or trauma experience, or an existing Clinical Specialist working in surgical devices, orthopaedics, trauma or a closely related theatre-based role.

Role Overview

The Clinical Specialist will provide clinical, technical and procedural support to surgeons, theatre teams, ODPs and scrub staff before, during and after orthopaedic surgical procedures. You will work across NHS and private hospital accounts, helping ensure the correct equipment, implants and instruments are available and ready for use. The role combines in-theatre case support, product training, account support, stock management and close collaboration with the regional commercial team. This is a field-based role requiring regular travel across Devon and Cornwall, with frequent time spent in operating theatres.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide professional in-theatre support during orthopaedic surgical procedures.
  • Advise surgeons and theatre teams on the appropriate use of specialist orthopaedic devices and instrumentation.
  • Support clinical teams before, during and after surgery to help ensure cases run smoothly.
  • Deliver product training and practical support to theatre staff, scrub teams and other clinical stakeholders.
  • Build strong relationships with NHS and private hospital accounts across the territory.
  • Act as a key link between the clinical environment and the regional sales/commercial team.
  • Support stock availability, loan kit bookings, instrument readiness, implant availability and consignment processes.
  • Carry out inventory checks, audits and stock-management activity where required.
  • Gather customer and clinical feedback from the field and share relevant insights internally.
  • Maintain accurate records using CRM and internal systems.
  • Represent the business professionally at hospital meetings, training sessions and regional clinical events.
  • Complete administration duties accurately and on time.
  • Work flexibly to support surgical schedules, customer needs and wider business requirements.

Candidate Profile

We are particularly interested in candidates from one of the following backgrounds:

  • Operating Department Practitioner / ODP.
  • Theatre Scrub Nurse with orthopaedic, trauma or surgical experience.
  • Clinical Specialist within orthopaedics, trauma, surgical devices or medical technology.
  • Theatre-based healthcare professional looking to move into a commercial clinical support role.
  • Medical device professional with strong theatre access and case-support experience.

Skills & Experience Required

  • Strong understanding of the operating theatre environment.
  • Orthopaedic theatre, trauma, scrub or surgical device experience would be highly advantageous.
  • Basic understanding of anatomy and physiology.
  • Confident communication style with surgeons, theatre teams and hospital stakeholders.
  • Ability to build trust quickly in a clinical setting.
  • Comfortable delivering training, guidance and practical support in theatre.
  • Organised, reliable and able to manage a field-based territory.
  • Good attention to detail, particularly around case preparation, stock and equipment.
  • Able to work independently while remaining part of a wider regional team.
  • Self-motivated with a willingness to continuously develop product and clinical knowledge.
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and CRM systems.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Working Environment

The role is field based and will involve regular travel to hospitals across Devon and Cornwall. Candidates should live within, or be able to travel effectively across, the territory. The successful candidate will be required to comply with hospital access, theatre protocol, infection control, occupational health and credentialing requirements. This may include relevant training, background checks, vaccination evidence and hospital safety compliance. The role may involve standing for long periods in theatre, wearing PPE and handling surgical equipment or loan kits where appropriate.

Why Apply?

This is an ideal opportunity for someone with a strong theatre background who enjoys being close to surgery, supporting clinical teams and developing specialist product and procedural expertise. For an ODP or orthopaedic scrub nurse, this could provide a strong step into a commercially focused clinical support role while still remaining closely connected to the operating theatre environment. For an existing Clinical Specialist, this offers the chance to manage a focused South West territory and build strong clinical relationships across orthopaedic and trauma services.
