Associate Director, NHS Access & Adoption

We are working with a leading organisation operating at the heart of UK healthcare and life sciences to appoint an Associate Director, NHS Access & Adoption.

This is a senior strategic role focused on one of the most important challenges facing the healthcare system: ensuring that innovative treatments which achieve national approval and access are subsequently adopted effectively, consistently and equitably across the NHS.

While considerable attention has historically focused on assessment and securing access to new treatments, increasing emphasis is now being placed on what happens afterwards – how national decisions translate into implementation, prescribing and routine clinical use at regional and local level.

The Associate Director will lead a portfolio of strategic policy, evidence and stakeholder programmes designed to better understand and overcome the barriers affecting adoption across the NHS in England.

This position will particularly suit someone with a deep, practical understanding of how the NHS works from the inside – including commissioning, prescribing, funding, decision‑making structures and the operational realities that influence whether new treatments are successfully adopted.

It offers the opportunity to move beyond individual products or organisations and influence healthcare policy and system change at a broader national level.

Key Responsibilities

You will lead the development and delivery of programmes aimed at improving the speed, consistency and equity of adoption across the NHS.

Responsibilities will include

• Developing strategies and policy recommendations designed to improve the adoption of innovative treatments across the NHS.
• Identifying national, regional and local barriers to adoption and developing practical, evidence‑led approaches to addressing them.
• Bringing detailed knowledge of NHS commissioning, prescribing, funding, infrastructure and decision‑making into the development of policy and strategy.
• Monitoring changes to NHS structures and operating models and assessing their potential impact on access and adoption.
• Understanding how national policy and guidance translate into regional and local decision‑making and implementation.
• Leading strategic projects focused on improving uptake and reducing unwarranted variation across the NHS.
• Translating complex operational and system‑level challenges into clear policy positions, recommendations and programmes of work.
• Developing and strengthening the evidence base surrounding access and adoption, using relevant national and regional healthcare data.
• Analysing trends and variations in uptake to identify barriers, opportunities and potential areas for intervention.
• Building trusted relationships with senior stakeholders across the NHS, government, healthcare organisations and the wider life sciences sector.
• Engaging with senior stakeholders to understand different perspectives and build support for practical solutions.
• Contributing to relevant NHS and government consultations and policy discussions.
• Representing the organisation at external meetings, working groups, conferences and stakeholder forums.
• Commissioning and managing research, evidence‑generation and policy projects delivered by external partners and specialist organisations.
• Managing project budgets, suppliers, timelines, quality and deliverables.
• Working collaboratively across internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure effective delivery of strategic priorities.
• Sharing insight and learning from individual programmes to support wider organisational strategy and future policy development.

About You

The strongest candidates are likely to bring substantial recent experience working within, or very closely with, the NHS, alongside a sophisticated understanding of the environment surrounding access to and adoption of innovative treatments.

We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate

• Significant and current knowledge of NHS commissioning and prescribing.
• A detailed understanding of how the NHS operates at national, regional and local level.
• Practical knowledge of how national recommendations and access decisions translate into local implementation and routine clinical use.
• Understanding of the structural, financial and operational barriers that can influence adoption.
• Experience gained within the NHS, NHS England, an Integrated Care Board, government, life sciences or another organisation working closely with the health system.
• Ideally, experience spanning both the NHS/public sector and life sciences industry, although deep and recent NHS experience is considered particularly valuable.
• Strong understanding of the wider UK healthcare and life sciences environment.
• The ability to understand and balance differing NHS, policy and commercial perspectives.
• Proven ability to establish credibility and influence senior stakeholders across complex organisations.
• Strong policy development and strategic thinking skills.
• Excellent analytical capability and confidence interpreting healthcare data and evidence.
• Strong programme and project‑management experience, including taking complex initiatives from concept through to delivery.
• Excellent written communication and presentation skills.
• The confidence to chair meetings, facilitate complex discussions and communicate effectively with senior stakeholders.
• A collaborative and inclusive working style combined with the ability to operate independently and take ownership of a significant portfolio.

A relevant graduate or postgraduate qualification may be advantageous, but depth of knowledge, credibility and current understanding of the NHS environment are more important than a particular academic background or prescribed number of years' experience.
