Transport Planner

You’ll never feel stuck in a transport planning role. There’s always a wide variety of projects to oversee, from road transit and freight logistics to cycling and walking schemes. Your job is to keep things moving in an efficient and sustainable way.

What you’ll do

Transport Planners help develop strategies that keep our local transport network efficient, safe and sustainable. You’ll need to consider what your local community needs and balance that with environmental targets and economic demands.

A typical day might include:

• Talking to local residents to understand their needs and concerns.
• Brainstorming transport solutions in meetings with stakeholders.
• Overseeing projects, such as a new cycle path or public transport upgrade.
• Using transport modelling software to predict traffic and demand.
• Preparing reports and presenting findings to senior leadership teams.

Who you are

You need to be a good listener with great analytical skills and a flair for attention to detail. As well as having a technical brain it’s important to want to help people.

Ideally you’ll have:

• Relevant degree or certification in fields such as urban planning, civil engineering, geography or environmental science.
• Experience of using statistical tools and software, such as Excel and Python.
• Understanding of transport modelling software, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and 3D design packages.
• Familiarity with transport and urban planning regulations and sustainable practices.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
