Trainee Technician

There’s nothing humdrum about our highways. As a Trainee Technician you’ll have loads of opportunities to get on site, carry out surveys, make sure schemes meet with Health and Safety regulations, and highlight any issues to your project lead. Not bad for a newbie.

What you’ll do

You’ll support the design, maintenance and management of highways and structural projects for your local council. As a Trainee Technician, your main job is to help senior engineers in all aspects of their duties.

A typical day might include:

• Doing site inspections to check works are being carried out as expected.
• Making sure projects and schemes meet compliance with regulations, including statutory Health and Safety requirements.
• Recording measurements, taking photographs and conducting traffic surveys to be documented in reports.
• Identifying issues, defects, and non-compliance with assets, schemes and/or projects and making recommendations for action.
• Using design software, such as AutoCAD, to create or modify technical drawings.

Who you are

You have a keen interest in structural engineering and want to gain hands-on experience to become a fully-fledged technician.

Ideally you’ll have:

• Basic knowledge of highway design, construction, and measurement techniques.
• General understanding of Highways and Engineering activities and background.
• Understanding of legislation relevant to the responsibilities of the post.
• Competent ICT skills relevant to the duties and responsibilities mentioned.
• Commitment and enthusiasm for the Highways and Engineering profession.
• Excellent communication skills and a desire to learn on the job.
