You’ll explore so many different skills in a town planning role. From land use management to infrastructure planning, it’s your job to make our communities thrive. It’ll be your job to create sustainable, beautiful and useful places to be.

What you’ll do

Being a Town Planner involves a mixture of admin tasks, site visits and stakeholder engagement to make the best use of land within the local area. A typical day might include:

  • Checking and answering emails from interested parties.
  • Reviewing planning applications and attending meetings to discuss projects.
  • Making site visits to check suitability of land use and addressing any concerns with local residents.
  • Writing and submitting detailed reports on planning proposals for review.
  • Researching and analysing data to support strategic planning decisions.

Who you are

A strategic thinker with a naturally curious mind, you’ll enjoy using your maths and geography skills to develop sustainable schemes that balance people and progress.

Ideally you’ll have:

  • Degree or apprenticeship qualification or relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of planning legislation including court procedures and government regulations.
  • Experience of processing planning applications or contributing to development plans.
  • Good computer literacy including the main software applications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to mediate.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a strategic approach to planning.
