About the Role
This position is ideal for an Electronics Engineer, Electrical Engineer, Controls Engineer, Test Engineer, Electronics Technician, PCB Engineer, Automation Engineer, Mechatronics Engineer, or Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer who is ready to move from an industry role into a training and development career. You do not need previous teaching or training experience. Full support, training, and recognised teaching/assessor qualifications will be provided.
As an Engineering Trainer, you will deliver engaging, practical, and theoretical training to small groups of learners across a range of modern engineering disciplines. You’ll be helping future engineers develop the technical and professional skills they need to succeed in the industry, drawing directly from your own real-world experience.
Job Purpose
- Deliver high-quality electronics, electrical, and/or mechanical engineering training through classroom, workshop, and online sessions.
- Teach using your industry background, bringing practical examples, troubleshooting methods, and engineering best practice into the learning environment.
- Develop learners’ technical, professional, and behavioural skills in line with current apprenticeship standards.
- Provide constructive, supportive feedback that helps learners grow into confident and capable engineers.
- Maintain and develop innovative learning resources and curricula that reflect current industry technologies and methods.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning
- Deliver practical and theoretical content at Levels 2, 3 and Level 4 (HNC/HND) in subjects such as: Electrical Principles, Electronic Principles, Digital Electronics, Analogue Electronics, PLCs, Robotics, Sensors & Instrumentation, Control Systems, Microcontrollers, Circuit Design, Fault Finding & Diagnostics, Mechatronics, Embedded Systems, or Engineering Maths, Engineering Science, Mechanical Principles, Materials, Fluid Power if multi-skilled.
- Support apprentices to progress successfully through their programme.
- Encourage curiosity, problem-solving and innovative thinking in learners.
- Guide learners through developing prototypes, testing ideas, and iterative design.
Person Specification
- Strong background in electronics, electrical engineering or related disciplines.
- Passion for developing others and sharing engineering knowledge.
- Able to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Highly organised, with excellent attention to detail.
Knowledge & Experience
Essential:
- Industry experience in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or Multi-skilled Engineering.
- Ability to explain engineering concepts clearly and logically.
- Interest in progressing into a training/teaching career.
Qualifications
Essential:
- Level 3 qualification (or higher) in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a similar engineering discipline.
Desirable:
- Functional Skills Level 2 / GCSE Maths and English (grade C/4+).
- Level 4+ engineering qualification (HNC/HND/Degree).
- Internal Quality Assurance qualification (V1/IQA).
- Coaching or mentoring qualification.
- A recognised teaching qualification.
- An assessor qualification (e.g., A1, CAVA).
