The role
The Financial Times is seeking a Head of Newsletters to lead the newsletter strategy, oversee a large portfolio of newsletters, and manage the team responsible for producing them. This senior leadership role within the Subscriber Engagement team combines editorial judgement, audience insight, strategic thinking and people leadership to deliver distinctive value to readers and contribute to subscriber engagement and retention.
Responsibilities
- Own and deliver the newsroom’s newsletter strategy.
- Manage and continuously optimise the newsletter portfolio.
- Identify opportunities to launch, redesign, consolidate or retire newsletters based on audience needs, editorial focus areas and business goals.
- Ensure every newsletter has a clear editorial purpose, target audience and measurable objectives.
- Develop standards and best practices for newsletter creation, editing and performance.
- Use audience, behavioural and subscription data to improve newsletter performance.
- Identify opportunities to increase reader habit, engagement and subscriber loyalty.
- Establish meaningful performance measures and regularly review portfolio health.
- Work closely with data and insight teams to understand reader needs and newsletter impact.
- Manage and develop the newsroom’s newsletter editors and writers.
- Set clear priorities and goals for the team.
- Foster a culture of experimentation, learning and continuous improvement.
- Support professional development and editorial excellence.
- Work closely with editorial leaders across the newsroom to strengthen newsletter offerings and identify new opportunities.
- Collaborate with Product and Technology teams to improve newsletter tools, user experience and capabilities.
- Partner with Marketing, Data and Commercial teams to maximise the impact of the newsletter portfolio.
- Act as the newsroom’s senior representative and advocate for newsletters across the organisation.
- Monitor developments in newsletters, creator products, email publishing and audience engagement.
- Test new formats, approaches and technologies.
- Identify opportunities to use AI and automation to improve workflows and reader experiences.
Skills and experience
- Significant experience leading editorial products, newsletters or audience‑focused publishing initiatives.
- Strong understanding of subscriber engagement, reader behaviour and retention strategies.
- Experience managing teams and developing talent.
- Excellent editorial judgement and understanding of quality journalism.
- Strong analytical skills and confidence using audience data to inform decisions.
- Experience working effectively with Product, Technology, Marketing and Data teams.
- Ability to balance strategic thinking with operational delivery.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
