Spring provides a range of wrap-around services, including food banks, a social supermarket, advice services, training programmes, holiday clubs, and women’s groups, supporting communities across Southwark and Havering.
As the organisation continues to grow, we are seeking a Finance Manager to strengthen our financial management, support strategic growth, and ensure robust governance. The
Finance Manager will work closely with the CEO, the Senior Leadership Team, and the Board of Trustees, providing clear, timely financial information to support decision-making across the organisation.
The Role
This is a foundational role.
The Finance Manager will build Spring's financial infrastructure from the ground up, establishing systems, controls, and processes while also providing the day-to-day and strategic financial management the organisation needs to grow.
The role combines hands-on financial management with strategic financial planning, working closely with the CEO, senior leadership team, and Board of Trustees to support the charity’s sustainability and growth.
Key Responsibilities
- 1. Set up and manage day-to-day financial management
- Organise the transfer to in-house management of all financial processes
- Manage day-to-day bookkeeping
- Process purchase invoices, income, and expense claims.
- Manage payment runs and banking transactions.
- Oversee payroll processes and ensure compliance with HMRC requirements.
- Maintain effective financial controls and ensure compliance with charity finance regulations.
- Support budget holders in monitoring project expenditure.
- 2. Financial reporting
- Produce monthly management accounts, including income and expenditure analysis.
- Monitor organisational cashflow and provide regular forecasts.
- Prepare financial reports for the CEO and Senior Leadership Team to support operational decision-making.
- Produce financial reports and summaries for Trustees and the Finance Committee.
- Support monitoring and reporting for grants and restricted funding.
- Ensure financial information is accurate, timely, and clearly communicated.
- 3. Budgeting and financial planning
- Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with programme leads and senior management.
- Support project managers to develop realistic budgets for new initiatives and funding bids.
- Monitor financial performance against budgets and highlight risks or opportunities.
- Provide financial modeling to support organisational planning and growth.
- 4. Strategic financial support
- Act as a financial adviser to the CEO and senior leadership team.
- Contribute to strategic planning, helping ensure that organisational plans are financially sustainable.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen financial sustainability and diversify income.
- Support funding applications and grant proposals with financial information and projections.
- 5. Governance, compliance, and audit
- Maintain financial policies and procedures in line with the charity's best practices.
- Support the preparation of annual accounts and liaise with external accountants or auditors.
- Ensure compliance with Charity Commission requirements and financial regulations.
- Support the Finance Committee and Board with financial oversight and governance responsibilities.
Person Specification
Essential
- Professional qualification (ACCA, ACA, CIMA) or qualified by experience.
- Proven ability to design and implement financial processes and systems in organisations where they are underdeveloped or absent.
- Experience managing finances within a charity, social enterprise, or small organisation.
- Strong financial management and accounting skills.
- Experience in preparing management accounts and budgets.
- Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues.
- Strong attention to detail and organisational skills.
Desirable
- Experience in the charity or community sector.
- Knowledge of grant funding and restricted income management.
- Experience supporting trustees or finance committees.
- Experience with charity accounting software (e. g., Xero, Sage, Quick Books).
