About Us: The Financial Ombudsman Service is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that plays a vital role in UK financial services. Every day we help resolve disputes between consumers, or small businesses, and their financial service providers. Using a cloud first approach, our Infrastructure department provides the foundation for all of our IT and communication services.
As an experienced Network Engineer, you’ll be responsible for maintaining the stability and performance of our core modern enterprise infrastructure and systems. This is a broad network engineering role. Alongside ‘BAU’ responsibilities, you will help deliver ongoing service improvements and contribute to the implementation of projects, ensuring that current and future requirements are met.
If you are looking for a network engineering role where you can build on existing expertise, take ownership of your technical development, and play an active role in driving innovation, automation and service improvement, then this role could be a great fit for you.
We are looking for engineers who are already operating at a strong level, with a proactive approach to learning through self-study, lab work and engagement with evolving network technologies.
What You’ll Do:
- Take ownership of specific network systems and services, ensuring they are maintained throughout their lifecycle and meet defined availability, performance, security and supportability standards.
- Ensure the smooth operation of services while adhering to agreed SLAs, taking accountability for escalated technical issues and delivering sustainable, well-understood resolutions.
- Act as a strong communicator, building effective relationships with stakeholders across technical and non-technical teams to understand requirements, expectations and areas for improvement.
- Work closely with project managers, stakeholders and delivery teams to understand both business and technical requirements, contributing to the successful delivery of network solutions.
- Take ownership of technical delivery activities, ensuring solutions are implemented in a stable, scalable and supportable manner aligned to organisational standards.
- Contribute to network design activity, working alongside our architecture team to provide input, feedback and practical implementation considerations.
- Drive continuous improvement by identifying and implementing changes where services do not meet expected standards, or where there are opportunities to enhance performance, resilience, security or efficiency.
- Proactively identify, assess and remediate security vulnerabilities across the network estate.
- Provide technical expertise and guidance, influencing decisions on improvements, standards and future direction of services and technologies.
- Maintain high-quality design, implementation and operational documentation to support ongoing service stability and knowledge sharing.
To be considered for this role, you’ll need to show us that you’ve got the skills and capabilities. You’ll have to meet the following minimum criteria:
- Currently operating at an experienced network engineer level, with evidence of independently taking ownership of network systems and delivering implementation, operational support and service improvements.
- Experience supporting enterprise-scale network environments of a similar complexity, including both operational and delivery responsibilities.
- Demonstrable experience of taking ownership of technical outcomes, including leading delivery across project and service lifecycles, managing implementation activities, resolving complex issues and driving improvements to live services.
- Experience working across a broad range of network technologies and services, with the ability to adapt and take ownership of multiple network technologies and disciplines.
- Proven experience working within a technical team, contributing to both day-to-day operations and the delivery of change, with the ability to manage competing priorities and operate effectively within structured service management and change management processes.
- Strong experience working in a stakeholder-facing environment, with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Technical minimum criteria:
- Strong hands-on experience with Cisco networking technologies, including routing and switches (Nexus and Catalyst), SD-WAN, Wireless, and remote access solutions (e.g. Cisco Secure Client/AnyConnect and ASAv), with the ability to implement, support and troubleshoot in a complex environment.
- Experience working with enterprise cloud networking, ideally within Microsoft Azure IaaS; candidates with equivalent experience with other major cloud providers will also be considered.
- Solid understanding and practical experience of IP routing protocols and data centre network architectures, including OSPF, MP-BGP, and modern fabric technologies such as VXLAN and EVPN, with the ability to implement and troubleshoot in a production environment.
- Experience supporting network security technologies, including firewalls and network access control solutions (e.g. Cisco ISE), with the ability to understand, manage and troubleshoot security policies and configurations.
- Experience managing core network services (e.g. DNS, NTP, DHCP) as part of maintaining a stable and reliable network environment.
- Experience with, or a strong interest in, automation and Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terraform, Bicep, ARM), with the ability to contribute to and support evolving automation practices.
What you’ll bring:
- A good match on an individual level to our organisational values.
- Natural curiosity and a keen interest in all things ‘network engineering’– you like to build your own knowledge by attending webinars, listening to podcasts etc.
- In addition, it would be highly desirable if candidates are studying towards or are qualified with Cisco CCNP or CCIE.
