Filtronic is seeking a highly skilled Electronics Engineer to support and lead the design of radio frequency products with responsibility for analogue and digital circuit design and schematic capture, ensuring that electrical performance, quality, cost and manufacturability requirements are met. You will work on innovative RF and communications products from concept through to volume manufacture, contributing to telecoms, space, high-altitude platforms, and defence systems. This role offers the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary environment alongside RF, FPGA and systems engineers, using modern development tools and cutting-edge technology.
Purpose of Role
The role is to lead the specification, design, development and verification of advanced analogue and digital electronic circuits that enable high-performance telecommunications, satellite and defence products. Working closely with our RF engineering team and cross-functional hardware, software and firmware groups, you will create robust mixed-signal solutions that integrate seamlessly into complex system architectures. You will be responsible for the end-to-end design of digital and analogue circuitry, including high-speed digital systems utilising FPGAs, microprocessors, ADCs, DACs and associated glue logic; low-voltage power supply modules; component bias networks; and analogue signal-conditioning elements such as filters and amplifiers. This includes detailed component selection, simulation, schematic capture, PCB requirements definition and the delivery of fully verified, documented designs that meet strict technical, schedule and cost targets.
The role also covers working with modern high-speed digital interface standards (PCIe, USB, Ethernet, CAN bus, I²C, SPI, etc.), ensuring compatibility and performance; resolving hardware and communication issues; performing system-level integration and testing; and supporting reliability processes including thermal analysis, MTBF, component derating and tolerance assessments. You will contribute to design reviews, manage component obsolescence and support product introduction through problem-solving, fault diagnosis and the preparation of diagnostic procedures. By staying current with industry trends and emerging standards, you will ensure our products remain innovative, reliable and competitive.
Summary of Responsibilities
- Specify, design, develop and test electronic circuits and systems for telecommunications
- Design analogue circuitry such as signal conditioning stages, filters and op-amp-based solutions
- Design digital circuits using FPGAs, glue logic, ADCs, DACs and microprocessors
- Design low-voltage module power supplies, including both linear and switch-mode PSUs
- Create component bias circuits
- Produce detailed analogue and digital circuit specifications, including component selection and circuit simulation
- Work with digital interface standards and protocols—including PCIe, USB, CAN bus, I²C, SPI and Ethernet—to ensure system compatibility and high performance
- Collaborate with hardware, software and firmware teams to ensure seamless integration of analogue/digital designs into broader systems
- Troubleshoot and resolve hardware and communication issues relating to digital circuits and interfaces
- Conduct system-level integration and testing to verify performance and reliability requirements
- Keep up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies and standards
- Perform schematic capture and define circuit board requirements, including materials and layer stack
- Deliver fully verified and documented designs that meet project technical, schedule and cost targets
- Carry out thermal analysis, MTBF assessments, component derating and tolerance analysis
- Undertake design verification and validation activities, including preparing test specifications, test reports and reliability evaluations in our on-site laboratories
- Actively participate in design reviews and initiate reviews when appropriate to mitigate risks
- Manage component obsolescence and recommend suitable alternative components
- Support product introduction through problem-solving and fault diagnosis, including defining and training out diagnostic procedures
Requirements
- Relevant degree in electronic engineering (or equivalent)
- Experience in circuit schematic generation using Altium Designer is highly desirable
- Experience with analogue and digital signal processing (DSP) techniques for RF applications
- Demonstrable experience of component-level electronic circuit design and development
- Familiarity with EMC/EMI design and testing
- An awareness of high-volume surface mount process/technologies and design for high-volume manufacture
- Experience with test equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, spectrum analysers and logic analysers
- Experience of RF/microwave electronic circuit design and implementation desirable
- Experience with software-defined radio (SDR) systems desirable
