Lead the electronics behind some of the world’s most advanced RF communications systems. A senior technical leadership role shaping the architecture of complex analogue, digital and mixed-signal electronics used in telecoms, satellite and defence platforms. Filtronic is hiring a Head of Electronic Systems, based at our Cambridge site, to lead the architecture and delivery of electronic hardware underpinning our high-performance RF and mmWave products. Working closely with RF, FPGA, systems and mechanical engineering teams, you will guide electronic subsystem design from concept through qualification and volume manufacture, ensuring designs meet demanding performance, reliability and manufacturability targets. This role combines technical leadership with hands-on engineering involvement, with the opportunity to influence product architecture, engineering standards and the development of our electronics capability.

The Role
You will lead the architecture, specification and governance of electronic subsystems that underpin Filtronic’s RF and mmWave products. Working within multidisciplinary engineering teams, you will ensure designs integrate cleanly into complex RF systems and meet demanding performance, reliability and manufacturing requirements across the full development lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the architecture, specification and delivery of electronic subsystems from concept through production
- Provide technical leadership across analogue, digital and mixed-signal hardware design
- Guide designs involving FPGA/SoC platforms, microprocessors and high-speed ADC/DAC devices
- Oversee analogue circuitry including signal conditioning, filtering, amplification and bias networks
- Define key system interfaces and protocols including PCIe, Ethernet, USB and control buses
- Ensure robust power architecture, sequencing and protection
- Work closely with RF, firmware, FPGA and systems teams to deliver integrated hardware solutions
- Lead hardware bring-up, integration, debug and root-cause analysis
- Define verification strategies including test plans and validation approaches
- Drive design-for-manufacture and design-for-test practices
- Chair design reviews and manage technical risks and trade-offs
- Support product introduction and manufacturing improvements
- Mentor engineers and help develop electronics engineering capability
About You
You will combine strong electronics design expertise with the ability to guide engineering teams and influence complex product development programmes. We are particularly interested to hear from candidates with:
- Degree in Electronic Engineering or equivalent relevant experience
- Significant experience designing analogue, digital or mixed-signal electronic systems
- Experience leading electronic architecture and design reviews
- Experience with ECAD tools such as Altium Designer
- Strong understanding of signal integrity, converters, clocks, grounding and power design
- Experience supporting EMC/EMI compliance and product qualification
- Knowledge of design-for-manufacture and production hardware development
- Hands-on laboratory debugging using oscilloscopes and electronic test equipment
Experience in RF or communications systems, SDR architectures, satellite platforms or high-reliability electronics would be advantageous.
