ABOUT FILM & TV ACADEMY:
At the Film & TV Academy (FTA), we believe the best way to learn filmmaking is by making films!
We provide young people aged 8-12 with exciting, hands-on filmmaking experiences, guiding them through the entire creative process, from script to screen.
Our students don't just learn about filmmaking and acting - they become filmmakers & actors.
From developing scripts and directing scenes to operating cameras, recording sound and bringing productions to life, students work collaboratively to create short films, comedy sketches, documentaries, mockumentaries and other original content.
Unlike traditional classroom-based learning, our sessions are practical, energetic and creatively driven. Students learn through real filmmaking experiences, developing their creativity, confidence, technical skills and teamwork.
Throughout the year, students produce original content, which is showcased at our annual cinema screening and awards ceremony, where their achievements are celebrated on the big screen.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
We're looking for an enthusiastic, creative and responsible Assistant Filmmaking Tutor to join our team.
Working alongside our lead Filmmaking Tutor, you'll help deliver engaging, hands-on filmmaking sessions to groups of up to 17 students, aged 8-12.
You’ll be actively involved throughout the production process, sharing your knowledge, contributing creative ideas and helping students create content they're genuinely proud of.
A fundamental part of your role is safeguarding and student supervision.
While the Filmmaking Tutor leads the planning, creative direction and overall delivery of sessions, you’ll take a proactive role in ensuring students remain safe, appropriately supervised, supported and accounted for.
You’ll also support individual students and occasionally lead smaller groups under the direction of the Filmmaking Tutor.
You won’t be required to plan the overall programme or edit completed productions, allowing you to focus on creative participation, student engagement and maintaining a safe, positive environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Safeguarding is a central responsibility of this role. You’ll be expected to:
- Actively supervise students, ensuring their safety, wellbeing and appropriate behaviour.
- Conduct regular, predetermined headcounts and maintain awareness of students' whereabouts.
- Ensure students remain in authorised areas and do not wander off or leave the premises.
- Identify potential hazards and maintain a safe environment throughout filming activities.
- Respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns, including bullying, inappropriate behaviour or disclosures, and promptly report them in accordance with FTA's safeguarding procedures.
- Support students who may feel anxious, excluded or uncomfortable.
- Work closely with the Filmmaking Tutor and designated safeguarding lead to address concerns appropriately.
- Promote an inclusive, welcoming and respectful environment for everyone.
Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, but you'll play a particularly important role in the supervision of students.
Filmmaking & Creative Production:
You’ll be actively involved at every stage of the filmmaking process, including:
- Helping students develop creative ideas, concepts, scripts and storylines.
- Supporting pre-production planning, storyboarding, shot lists, props and filming locations.
- Assisting students with cameras, lighting, sound equipment and other filmmaking tools.
- Supporting filming, camera operation, directing and general production activities.
- Coaching students through screen performances, helping them develop confidence in front of the camera.
- Sharing practical filmmaking techniques and technical knowledge.
- Encouraging creativity, teamwork and problem-solving throughout productions.
- Helping organise and maintain filmmaking equipment, props and production spaces.
- Contributing your own creative ideas and expertise to improve students' productions.
We want you to bring your own creativity and filmmaking knowledge to the role. Your ideas and contributions will be welcomed and encouraged.
Student Engagement:
Although the lead Filmmaking Tutor is responsible for planning and leading sessions, you’ll also play an important role in teaching, mentoring and supporting students.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing practical, hands-on guidance and demonstrating filmmaking techniques.
- Explaining technical and creative concepts clearly and enthusiastically.
- Supporting students with different abilities, personalities and experience levels.
- Helping new students feel immediately welcomed, included and involved in ongoing projects.
- Encouraging confidence, teamwork, creativity and communication.
- Leading or supervising smaller groups when required, under the Filmmaking Tutor's direction.
- Adapting your approach to suit different age groups and individual needs.
- Helping ensure every student has a positive, engaging and enjoyable experience.
Our philosophy is simple: students learn by doing, not by sitting through lectures.
ABOUT YOU:
We're looking for someone who combines a genuine passion for filmmaking with the enthusiasm, patience and responsibility needed to work effectively with young people.
You don’t necessarily need formal teaching qualifications. We’re interested in filmmakers, videographers, creative professionals and individuals with the right practical skills, personality and enthusiasm to inspire young aspiring filmmakers.
- Good practical knowledge of filmmaking, including production processes and techniques.
- Confidence using cameras, sound equipment and other common filmmaking tools.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- A friendly, approachable and encouraging personality.
- A genuine interest in working with children and teenagers.
- A responsible, attentive approach to safeguarding, supervision and student wellbeing.
- The ability to remain calm, organised and professional when supervising young people.
- Creativity, enthusiasm, flexibility and strong teamwork skills.
- Reliability, punctuality and a proactive attitude.
- Willingness to complete safeguarding training and follow FTA's policies and procedures.
- Experience in filmmaking, videography, television production or related creative industries.
- Experience working with children or young people.
- Experience teaching, mentoring, coaching or delivering workshops.
- Familiarity with professional filmmaking equipment.
- Knowledge of screen acting, directing or production planning.
- Previous safeguarding or first aid training.
Experience is valuable, but attitude and passion matters just as much. We’re looking for someone who can connect with young people, encourage their creativity and take their safety and wellbeing seriously.
