The Foundation for International Law for the Environment (FILE) is a not‑for‑profit philanthropic organisation working to accelerate legal action on climate change and empower partners through grant‑making and in‑house legal expertise.

The Role

The Finance Business Partner – Grants will strengthen collaboration between Finance and Grants teams, supporting effective financial management of the grants portfolio and translating financial data into actionable insights for Grants teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic financial partnership to Grants Managers, Portfolio teams and other stakeholders.
  • Support best‑practice granting approaches, including foreign exchange, inflation adjustments and cost benchmarking.
  • Guide on grant due diligence, budget setup and financial reporting reviews.
  • Enable effective decision‑making at executive level by analysing granting and fundraising data.
  • Support quarterly grants forecasting and monitor budget envelopes.
  • Manage grant fund allocations and budget envelopes to meet donor requirements and restrictions.
  • Prepare and support grants‑related financial reporting.
  • Present financial information in a clear, user‑friendly way.
  • Support the effective use of the Grant Management System (GMS) and financial processes.
  • Lead on the financial administration of the GMS and contribute process improvements.

  • Accurate and timely grant forecasts and budgets.
  • High‑quality financial insights and reporting.
  • Inform annual funding allocations aligned with organisational budgets and granting plans.

Essential Criteria

  • Relevant accounting qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Significant experience in grant finance management, including donor restrictions and foreign exchange considerations.
  • Strong financial modelling, forecasting and scenario analysis skills.
  • Skilled in management reporting and data analysis, able to present financial information clearly to non‑finance audiences.
  • Highly proficient in Excel and financial systems.
  • Experienced business partner who translates data into clear, actionable insight for stakeholders up to executive level.
  • Clear, confident communication in writing and verbally across teams and cultures.
  • Builds effective relationships, influences decisions and maintains strong financial controls.
  • Organised and able to manage competing priorities proactively.
  • Adaptable under pressure, shifting between workstreams and priorities.
  • Applies sound judgement and critical thinking to identify problems early and drive practical solutions.

Based in the United Kingdom or the Netherlands. We are hiring for a single position in either location.
