A Modern Apprenticeship is a work-based training programme that leads to an industry approved qualification. The training can be both on and off-the-job, which means Modern Apprentices (MAs) learn the right mix of skills, abilities and knowledge.

You will work on all aspects of Building Services activities, which can range from maintenance and repair to new builds. Fife Council Building Services Construction has a Respiratory Protective Equipment policy. The policy requires personnel working in environments where inhalation of substances harmful to health will mean a requirement to wear tight fitting protective equipment (examples of which are disposable masks). Therefore, personnel must undertake a face fitting, which will require the wearer to meet regulatory requirements as per HSG 53 Respiratory Equipment at Work (HSE Guidance).

You will be working under the direct instruction of a tradesperson, or alone, to develop the skills and knowledge for the chosen trade whilst demonstrating an enthusiasm and willingness to achieve a high degree of competence.

We particularly encourage applications from women, who are currently underrepresented within this type of work. These vacancies are restricted to applicants who live in Fife. You must be aged between 16 and 24 on or by the specified start date. Alternatively, successful applicants can start at 15 years old; however, your 16th birthday must be by 30th September 2026. A School Leavers Form and National Insurance number will be required. If you are under 16 and don’t have a National Insurance number, please email us.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate the ability to achieve SVQ level 3 (SCQF Level 6). You may be required to travel outwith Fife to attend College to achieve this qualification. You will have an appreciation of the construction industry and knowledge of tasks undertaken by a Glazier. You will have the ability to follow instructions and be able to work outside and deal with the demands of the job.

You must read the job role profile carefully and complete the application on a PC/laptop rather than a phone device if possible, to ensure all elements of the form are visible. If you are short-listed, you will be required to carry out a skills test and, where applicable, an aptitude test. This will enable us to observe your hand skills, attitude, and the ability to follow instruction; you need to pass this prior to interview. We further recommend you fully research the role of the individual trade you are applying for within the construction industry.

Before confirming your appointment, you will be required to obtain Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme membership through Disclosure Scotland and become a member of the relevant PVG Scheme.
